Hi, Just bought my first Leon, a MK3 SE.

I stretched my budget to get a mk3 but couldnt find one with the tech pack for the right price.

Looking to get the LED headlights upgrade when I can save a bit, any idea how much this would cost, or if it can actually be done?!

Hm, I don't know how you're going to level them as they have an auto level function. They level based on sensors at the front and at the back axel. The sensors measure the angle at witch the vehicle is positioned and levels the headlights according to that(if you're towing something or if there is a lot of weight distributed at the back, if you go over a bump, etc.).

That's the first obsticle I remember. I don't know what's the wiring like and if the connectors are the same...probably not plug and play.

Anything is possible, but i would hazard a guess it will cost you an arm and a leg.
Lamp unit, wiring, levelling sensors and associated wiring and not sure and I'm sure someone will know for definite but ecu as I assume it would have to run through the ecu in order to display any faults on the screen. I had a 3 series BMW and looked at converting to xenon and the cost to retrofit was hideous, I would think the same would be true with the Leon

Then if you read the thread on Led headlights do you really want them, I have them and I am unsure yes I find them good for general vision but, snow and icy conditions the lenses do freeze over reducing visibility and some have found the levelling system failing at low temperatures.
 
I've read the headlight units are about 800 quid each, so I'd just save the money towards one with them already fitted.
 
That and from what others have said on here, they're not that good
 
There are lots more who are happy with them than are not. I like them when they work... which for me isnt very often! If they were more reliable id be more than happy with them. I certainly wouldn't pay for them, though, with actual money like... Definitely not.
 
I'm very happy with mine. I'd rate them slightly behind the xenon units on my previous Mk2, but the difference between the two, in my opinion, is so close that it only comes down to personal preference. That said, I'd take xenon or LED over halogen without any hesitation.
 
Dipped beam - =1st xenons + LED. 2nd Osram nightbreakers 3rd standard
Main beam - 1st xenons 2nd = LED + Osram night breakers. 3rd standard.
Although, I did an experiment recently. I put LEDs on main beam at night and drove along an unlit A road ( no moon, cloudy) out of twenty cars coming other way, only one flashed. ( so if it was you on A453 Bassetts Pole to Mile Oak , sorry!) then repeated said experiment in nightbreaker equipped Passat. 15 cars passed, 10 flashed.
Conclusion - A. LED's are not adjusted properly , or B. 19 out of 20 drivers are blind, or C. LED's are crap, or D. 10 out of 15 drivers are extremely light sensitive. Its good this science lark :)

We've had this discussion before. I still claim that the stock settings for the low beam are too low. That also means that the long beam will be too low. I drove quite a couple of cars but never drove one with so low level of the beams. The only car that aimed so low was the one with broken level sensors:D.

I adjusted mine a little higher(they are still aiming toward the ground) and I am more than satisfied now and don't get flashed. It's just the bloody bad weather when they really aren't good and then the xenons are far better.

So you drove along an unlit A road with your lights on full beam, seeing whether you dazzle oncoming traffic to the point of them needing to flash you or not? Were you trying to cause an accident? What would you have done/felt had you caused an accident? Are you a bit of a twat?
 
I prefer them to halogen and I don't think they have the retina burning glare of xenons. Nice and crisp light just where you want it.

I'm surprised that used cars with them command a premium over those without as I bet most with them were spec'd using the free tech pack offer. Surely there's enough supply to meet demand?!

Surprises me to see FR models without the LED's. Can't fathom why people wouldn't chose them seeing as they're free and make the car look much nicer.

Most cars I have seen without them have been company or hire cars - the free tech pack is only offered to private buyers.
