I just asked my dealer to do my Leon's first MoT while it's in for some other work next week, and I was told it would be £55!!! Now either the dealer is making a pretty markup on this or the cost of MoTs has gone up a fair bit since last time I had one! Is this normal??

In my experience most dealers dont do MOTs themselves, - they have a deal with a local place and run it down there. Or the MOT place comes and gets it and brings it back after... (and at £100 per hour labour its doubtful a dealer would consider an MOT as good use of their time) - unless they get work out of it
£45ish is atpyical price. (but this is a bit lower than DoTs price)

Id never get a dealer to do an MOT.

New MOT Regs require investment in new ramps that comply with the regulations, more staff training etc etc.

I wanted to buy an MOT standard ramp now would cost more than £25k!!!

If places haven't invested in this new equipment yet, they will have to shortly - or they will decide to sub-let this work to an MOT centre so that you can still have your service and MOT done at the same time, in the same place.

It's not exactly a profit earner now.....

Not quite...

This thread is discussing the cost of MoTs, the other is asking for advice on where to get an MoT in my locality. Related, but not the same! :p

contact you local authority. Most do MOT testing with no repairs, so you get an 'honest' MOT.

I take mine to a testing station, which does testing, and other than replacing bulbs and adjusting headlights do not repairs at all.
Id recomment a test only place everytime over others than offer a cheap MOT test.

Clearly doing a service and MOT at the same time is less hassle, so its up to you.
