Hi guys, was wondering if anyone could help.

My dads seat leon think he got the car new in 2004/05, was making a funny noise whilst driving and he took it to Arnold Clark this morning and they said it was the cam shaft and it would cost £500 for the part and to fit it!

I know practically nothing about cars but seems alot of money.

They also told my dad this morning that they didnt have the part and they would need to order it in and they just phoned there saying thats the car done.

Seems a bit iffy that they didnt have the part today and now all of a sudden at 2pm they phone saying its done when at 11am they didnt have the part, i cant see how they would have sourced the part and done the work within 3 hours.

My dads going to get the AA to check the car and see if the Camshaft has been replaced or not.

If it has does £500 seem fair for the part and for the labour? by the sounds of it if they have fitted it didnt take them very long especially to justify £500!

Any help with this would be appreciated, thanks

Which engine does the car have?

do you know hoe the £500 was made up?
ie what was the parts cost, what was the labour costs?

Clearly if they have charged more than 3 hours you can complain, but even then they charge according to the manual, which if it says is a 3 hours job but took 2 hours they still charge the book price.

It may be that they have charged for diagnosing the problem as well as fixing it. It also may be that the car was in bits to diagnose the issue, and left in bits ready for the replacement so that half the work was done before the new part was delivered.

Even so, thats alot of money for a 1.4!

Cheers for the info,i'm going with my dad in 15 mins to go and see them, what do you think would be a reasonable price?

Thanks

They haven't gave my dad anything as yet, hes to pay when we go to get the car and we'll get a receipt detailing the costs.

no idea, most seat dealers are approaching £100 per hour labour. ouch

this is very much a guestimate, but... it could be:
£90 diagnostic
£130 camshaft
2.5 hours labour, £250
anciliary bits, like seals, oils bolts etc £10.

not far off £500 then.

just thought, they may have renewed the cambelt while there.

£100 per hour! Crikey! Well we'll see what they say , some people have advised the part should be about £150 so if we are paying £350 for labour i think i'll tell them to take it back out.

Car went in at 11 and they said they didnt have the part then i got a call at 2 saying it was done so thats 3 hours in total.

Let you know what happens.
