Is the VW garage doing it through insurance? I really hope not as to meet insurance warranty standards etc they will put a new wing and bumper on leading to what the other guy said to you about it being written off :(

i cant seem how they can just write someones car off...surely if someone has done damage to it that wasnt there to start with they have to repair it..wether it be a £20 car or £2k car...its my car and if i want then it should be repaired..fair enough if the damage was caused by yourself..its royal mails fault so tough ****, if it cost them £1k to put right then they should do it...its not like the car was fit for the scrap yard before..

all i can say there will be one ****ing mad crezz loose unless it gets done

Unfortunately mate, they can. My first beloved GTi was written off even though it could be repaired, was deemed uneconomical and a cat C. I didnt want it written off but if i wanted any money at all and not a broken shell then it had to be. It too was a minter before the crash.

Insurance repairs have to be to the letter as they have to be warranted. Therefore they will replace anything with the slightest bit of damage or imperfection.

I really hope its fixed, but be ready for the worst that way things can only be better.

if it's deemed that it's not worth repairing - tell them to deliver it back to you & cut you a cheque for it's pre accident condition.

then use that to repair it yourself.

it will be on the register, but it doesn't matter.

tell em you want the car back untouched - and that they're to send you a cheque for the value of the car, less scrap value.

it'll be about £800.

just checked and updated

car still at bodyshop ? probably sat there waiting for an accessor to visit to report to the insurance company, may even be one on site, most have

don't panic just wait for the paperwork and contacts to tell you what they are doing next

IF they suggest it's uneconomical to to repair write back (registered post) explaining recent work on the car and the fact you require it returned to your custody

the car wont be looked at untill tomorrow as they had to send a recovery truck on a 140mile round trip to pick it up....the only thing i can hope is that royal mail just say fix...wat ould happen if i had a porsche..they still would have to pay a couple ££££££'s to fix, s whats the difference

if it's anything like most company policies nowadays they are likely to have a high excess on the insurance policies (keeps premiums low) so will pay for the repairs anyway

have to wait and see what happens on accessment really but as you are the victim it's up to them to make sure you are satisfied

they won't just wheel it off for scrap and send you a cheque - you'll get correspondence for ages yet

insurance companies are good at dragging heels as it means the owner becomes desperate and agitated to get it over with and usually accepts a 1st (crap) settlement offer so stand ya ground and be patient

Unfortunately insurance companies as a whole are accountants, they will do whatever action is cheapest for them, if its cheapest to write it off they will.

If you love the car and dont mind taking the pain yourself in the event of a write off situation ask for it back untouched and fix it yourself, they can't deny you that but they may pass on the recovery and admin charges for wasting their time.

Secondly ask them to pay out they will give you a cheque for the cars 'estimated' value minus the scrap value and you can have it back as a CAT C. It will be registered but it will still be going and you'll make a little on it, but the car will have little resale value.

Finally royal mail will also be run by accountants and if its cheapest for them to pay a little excess and have their insurance write it off than pay for the repairs they will. They're not really going to worry about pissing you off as (no disrespect) they can find another postie.

Lesson here, accountants f*cking suck!

I worked for a national dealership which had £500 excess on each car. so if its only going to be say £800 then they may just pay out as it will leave their premium unscathed come renewal.

Best of luck!!!

well bit of an update..they had done an estimate and have giving it to royal mail but havent told me what the price was....i explained everything to the bodyshop about its rebuild and what ive spent on it and what not and the chap did seem like he didnt want to write it off... the owner is into rallying and what not so may take some interest in this...and obviously they wont get anywork if its wrote off.

so all in all its down to rayal mail....so if they dont do it, there will be a big problem to deal with and likely a personal claim against the driver....soon as i know anything for definite i shall let you all know...fingers crossed guys and dolls
