Cupra (Copra) 290 0-60

Now I know the cupra isn't famed for its 0-60 times but I thought I'd give it a go and see if I could match or beat the claimed figures.

I used my Carista dongle and linked it to torque pro app. I know it won't be totally accurate but better than looking down at the Lap timer and guessing.

Oddly I was marginally quicker not using launch control. Massive amounts of wheel spin but when it grabbed 2nd it absolutely flew. Nice dry road conditions and mild air.

The sound was lovely with all 4 windows down

Interestingly I did the same in a friends m235i manual which is stage 1 400hp and he only managed 4.8 on his best run.

Amazing figures. I guess the tarmac was in perfect condition because the best Ι have achieved is 6.0 for the 60mph and 6.3 for the 100kph. It's obvious though that the car is capable of much better figures and it's only a matter of road/tyres condition.

The Continentals SC5P that the car came with from the factory. I haven't done many attempts for 0-60/0-100 though. The car has only 1600km on the clock and it's only 20 days old. Will change to Pirelli PZ4 next month cause the Contis are much too delicate for the Greek roads. Already destroyed two of them in my first short trip.

I'm also running contisport 5P. The car had only covered 900 miles so they are fairly fresh.

That’s some very good times you have. Mine only has 600 miles on it at present so I’m short shifting. Was stuck at a junction on the weekend and had to get out of a gap and it gripped well and even changing at 4K pulled really well through 1st to 3rd.

They are great stats it would be good to get a 30 to 70 time as this is the one I always look for. Autocar got 4.4sec for a 280 a few years ago so would think the 290 may go a little faster. This is where we keep up and beat the Golf R and RS.

Unfortunately the app doesn't have 30-70. It has 40-60 and 60-80 so will give those a good go and see what speed I get .

I though they were quoted as being 6 seconds 0-60, they're some impressive times for a fwd car!

The 5.44 is close to the figure a magazine got here using quality testing equipment. The 5.3 is very good, was the road surface quite warm at the time?

Not particularly was about 10 degrees air temp. Slightly better than normal UK road surface The majority are shocking. I was very impressed with how it put the power down once it had stopped squirming around in 1st.

Pretty sure it reads the car Speedo so will never be totally accurate. Although there is a setting which refers to GPS so not entirely sure.

Maybe worth finding out how far out your speedo is. Stick in on the motorway at 70mph and use an app like Waze to monitor the actual speed over a say a mile.

Torque Pro can read the cars speed sensor which is spot on, I've checked it against GPS and roadside speed signs. The error factor is built into the speedo display.
The main problem I've found is the refresh rate of some phones display causes a slight delay.

We had a lovely warm day up here in Scotland (for once) and I tried a few launches without the launch control as it's useless.

I was very surprised how quick the take off was and the lack off axle tramp compared with my old 280. Carefull throttle modulation is key as you all know. My car is on the standard factory fit Conti's 5.

I had a go at the 0-60 before in low temps and struggled to get 6.5 secs but in the warmer weather I think 5.5 is totally achievable.

I think the officially quoted figures are slower than than the pre 290 due to the extra gear in 7 speed.

It would be interesting to see a comparison against the 6 speed, I'm always weary when the car is in 6th gear at 30mph!

I’ve found that the error between the digital dash and GPS, GPS based apps and the road signs that indicate speed is virtually 0% on the MY19 car, whereas 2-3 mph error is the norm for analogue speedos on all of the VAG cars I’ve owned previously @ 70 mph (c.4%).

If there is wheel spin and you measure it using the car sensors/speedo via OBD port those values aren't real. GPS or GTFO
I still need to edit the videos, but recently at the ice track I was doing corners at what would be around 50-60kph sliding sideways with my foot flat on the gas, opposite lock and the speedo showing 133kph
If when you launch the wheels spin, then they spin faster and you get those times.
Not saying they are impossible, but unlikely.
BTW, measured via GPS, my Cupra is consistently 3kph over the real speed - 100kph indicated is actually 97kph.
