Funny how we like everything that helps make life easier, dishwashers, tv remotes, washing machines, yet we still insist on the daily torture of driving manual cars.

My wife has an auto, i like using it for little trips here and there, its lovely smooth and relaxing, but also boring, i never know what to do with my left leg and arm,

If i go for it it will be manual, just based on cost and that i dont want to regret it for three or four years.

I've properly driven DSGs, s-tronics, steptronics and just good automatics. They do an admirable job mostly.
But the main problem of modern cars is lack of involvement and, perhaps, loss of the art of driving with all the automation.
So a car has to be manual for me. Also lighter and cheaper and my left cycling leg gets to pedal too ;)

Dealers only stock DSGs over here and nobody sells a manual private either, so had to order a new one...

Whats the difference between DSGs, s-tronics and steptonics?

All modern cars (except a very small handful) lack involvement, but is that really down to the gearbox?

Where do you live that only stocks autos?

Main point is I've given the best auto gearboxes a chance (even if architecture is completely different between a wet clutch dsg and a 8-speed ZF auto, they all behave quite similarly), but for me at least they definitely remove at least one layer of (mechanical) involvement.

Sweden.
