I’ve noticed a few post where the depreciation on SEATs has been described as dreadful, catastrophic etc.
I’ve got another year before I’ll be selling the Cupra 290, so my question is, which car, around the same price as a Leon Cupra would provide the same fun, acceleration, roadholding, handling, looks etc BUT will depreciate at a much lower rate? Golf R?

If you are worried about depreciation I would suggest you are better off looking at Leasing (in one of the many forms)

With regards to you original question I would raise a counter question will the new Cupra Brand hold its value better ????

Golf R may depreciate less but you also have to look at the finance cost for like for like car.

In general in my opinion vw group support cars in the following order Audi, VW, Skoda and Seat however to get a fully loaded Audi is much more cash than the Seat / Cupra car....

Leasing sounds the best option for you as you will know up front what the cost is going to be.

Audi s3. BMW m140i. All bit quicker. Better holding value. Also maybe Mercedes a250. Bit slower like the golf gti.

Remember the important thing with depreciation is the cash amount! Not just the percentage of the cars value.
As an example, Say a Seat cost you £20000 and after 3 years it was worth £13000 65% of it's original value.
An equivalent Audi could be £25000 and after 3 years say it's worth £17500 70% of it's original value, so it's depreciated less as a percentage of it's original value. But it's lost (most importantly) £500 more than the seat.
Imo you stand to lose more money through depreciation with the premium manufacturers.

Also leasing is not a way to beat depreciation.

@Cuprobbie; The next generation of both the Leon and the Golf are due to be launched next summer, so the launch of the new model may have a negative impact on values of the current model for anyone like you looking to sell their car at that time. I suppose it depends on whether the Cupra and Golf R models are launched at the same time or later than the rest of the range - if a later launch for these performance models, then the demand for the current model will probably not be greatly affected until the next generation performance models appear (early 2020 maybe?).

They maybe some good deals to be had on the existing Cupra (and Golf R) at that time though, as dealers clear stocks for the new models.

On the subject of depreciation of the Golf R; VW were offering some crazy lease deals on the Golf R a few years ago, and 3 years later when the lease term of these cars was coming to an end, there was a glut of Golf R’s on the coming second hand market. So although the Golf in general may have lower depreciation than the Leon, over-supply can knock used values when the time comes to sell, even for slightly more premium brands.

Fully agree that leasing is not a way to beat depreciation but if i have understood it correctly it does mean you pay your depreciation monthly in the fixed cost rather than finding out when you come to sell the car. I should also point out here I have and will continue to outright own my cars.
I keep them till they start costing money / being unreliable then they go.

I also agree that VW were doing lots of silly deals to move cars but based on feedback on another thread a lot of those cars were base models so again you need to compare same spec cars because as @Curtly pointed out its not about percentage its about the actual cost.

Last point on this subject the government of the day are going to push us to smaller more fuel economic cars so you should consider the impacts of change on your car (as far as any of us can)

MK3 Cupra has been hit a lot harder than the MK1 Cupra/R and MK2 Cupra/R due to a number of reasons:

1. market flooded with lease cars
2. amount they have made
3. different versions 265/280/290/300

I do hope the MK4 is made a lot more exclusive.

When buying mine I estimated my Leon 280 would be worth around £14k after 3-4 years old and I thought it would be easier to sell., say compared to my last car Megane R26 (that was a real niche market). Cupras with similar spec and mileage are going for around that now but who’s going to pay a private seller £14k or even £13k for a 4 year old Cupra when the can throw £289 on a new cupra 300 lease deal. Seems lease deals seem to have ruined the second hand car market and the only easy way to sell is to give it away to the like of WBAC

They claim the new Cupra brand will be more exclusive , just have to wait and see if they live up to it

it wont be because they will just throw them out on cheap lease deals again, went to the gym the other night (in my MK2 Golf TDI) and there were 4x Cupras there.

Makes me want to buy a Hyundai i30N haha only seen one of them on the road.

I’ve also only seen one cupra locally and it’s not often. Ive Considered the i30n or the Peugeot gti as alternatives but the cupras mod better afterwards.
There’s been a few FR Models but different colours to my own. It kind of was one that stood out. But now one of the kids school teachers bought a used one exactly the same, white with panoramic roof (that made it unique). That’s after a year of owning it. They would of had to of been looking hard. Took a few months for this to come up and even know they are scarce on autotrader...at least with under 50k miles anyway.

One of the lads who used to be on here ( Crafoo) was looking at the Hyundai, but the monthly costs ( on a lease I believe) were around the £500 mark, as you say Cupra's are nearly £200 lower, hence the low take up.

Warrington Seat are flying cupras out for peanuts. Soon cupras will be like the Golf R, S3, must see at least a dozen of these a day. When did people hate owing their car.

I30N may be the way to go lol .... or electric

I see atleast 2 Cupra's a day. When I had my MK2 LCR would see maybe 1 a month. When I got my Cupra back in 2014 was the same.

since last year they have become common.
