Brewer's clearly biased, how on earth can he think that that ugly Mazda is better than the K1, reckon Mazda bunged him a decent wedge for that "review", still the general public reckoned the K1 was the most desireable, mainly cos that Mazda is pug ugly...
 
true the cupra looked so much better next to the mazda even with the "k1" kit (Aero kit)
and why did it not have the real cupra alloys on but the BTCC alloys on
the 3 tests were pretty crap anyway how can tht test hot hatches....??
 
Just watched the show. K1 was compared to the Mazda3 MPS.
The result.... :censored:

I can't spoil it for those not in the Central TV region ;)

Oh, and I've heard people say they don't like the latest series of BBC Top Gear, well I prefer it to ITV Pulling Power.

I thought the Mazda was a torque steering blunt instrument.

Wonder whether it was the MPS version with the uprated suspension / aero pack. I haven't seen it here so I'm guessing.

I'm really surprised by the reported verdict. Even if the Mazda 3 was £5k cheaper than the K1/Cupra I'd still buy the Cupra/K1 as it a much nicer car. Although neither are stunningly beautiful (I can't think of a hatch that is), the Cupra is much prettier than the Mazda. Add to this the fact that is on the all conquering Golf GTi platform and unless bias is introduced it should be a surefire winner.

No, the Mazda doesnt torque steer much at all.. little known and published fact is the Mazda actually has a LSD, albeit not as agressive as the R26 one.
The only difference with the aero pack over the standard car is eibach springs (still not got confirmation on the shocks), different wingmirrors and rear spoiler.

Depends what you want out of a car really... Mazda is better specced and more comfortable than the Cupra.. think more GT than rough and ready hothatch.

not driven one, just read a couple of articles where they have had multi car tests and they said it suffered a bit. I find it astonishing that more hot hatches aren't fitted with LSD's or at least given them as an option.

Think of the money car manufacturers could tap into if they offered option extras such as:

  • LSD
  • Uprated coilover kit
  • Uprated sports exhaust system
  • Uprated brake kit
  • Light-weight alloy wheel option with colour coding
  • OE endorsed remap (with warranty) - like Saab with Hersche

Appreciate there are all sorts of issue with stocking product, high costs due to limited product runs, insurance variations, aftercare etc... but if they were to go into partnership with an established recognised tuning house who they for instance supported in motorsport, then it would open up a whole new market of opportunity and save a lot of effort for those who want to just pick up a complete car.

Yeah.. i suppose Renault are the only european manufacturer who come close with the "cup" chassis kit.. kudos for them :)

Its a different story overseas though... all the Jap marques sell their own range of performance parts that can be bought from dealers..
 
I contemplated buying a Mazda 3 MPS before buying my FR but didnt for one clear reason, co2.

I find it quite irritating that shows dont compare the co2 because it really does make a difference, especially if, like me, you live in Central London. An FR costs me £252 in Congestion Charge payments for 1 year. The MPS costs me £2016 for one year. Makes a huge difference considering I keep cars for about 3 years.

Bloody 'ell, I always forget the 3MPS is a 2.5 litre rather than our 2.0T's. I suppose once you breach the mid 220g/km CO figs you're in for a big hike in tax. And with more towns moving to congestion charges people won't half feel it soon. The S3 is 221g/km so just scrapes in under the top banding thank god. New S3 with TSi engine is less again. Suppose Cupra must be quite a bit lower not lugging Haldex about everywhere.
 
The MPS is 226 I think. The Congestion Charge limit is 225! Most frustrating!

The same reasoning stopped me buying an ST, a car which, at the time, came in at 231!
 
This being a seat forum may leads others to think we are being biased but based on...

199g/km CO2
2.0 vs 2.5 for the majority of others.
5 doors
345mm brakes
Cost
VAG parts bin and engine choices

Makes the leon a much better value choice compared with others.

I did not take into account the Skoda equivalent, but I do not know enough about them to make a fair judgement on it.

Thats because of the 280PS limit on new cars in Japan.
They can't build cars with more power than that.
So they get round it by having their own tuning companys to get more out of the 'standard' car.

I could be very wrong, but I think that the law changed and that the 280PS (276bhp) law has been altered slightly, hence the new Nissan GTR (Skyline).
 
Specs on the Mazda:

2.3l 4cyl
k04 turbo
231g carbondioxides (band G)
320mm brakes
263bhp/280lbft
Torque sensing differential (LSD)
5 doors
loaded with kit as standard

Its more comfortable than the Cupra and FR too.

I agree with everyone that the mazda is the outside choice, especially with it being the only "hothatch" that falls into band G. even the ST scrapes to band F with everything else.

On the plus side, owning a MPS means you will probably never see another one on the road.. and it has S3/R32/BMW slaying power without shouting about it :D
 
Random fact:
The 2.3 MZR DISI engine in the 3 and 6 mps was originally designed to be a 300bhp engine... but then got restricted due to "marketing"
So.. a CAI and nice downpipe are good for close to 300bhp :)

Remaps are still not available because mazda use their own ECUs and they havent been cracked yet
 
Mike Brewer likes the Mazda.

Well, that's decided it for me then! I'll take the K1. And then use it to run over the annoying Cockerneee Geeeezah!
