Cupra related "common issues" / problems

Currently looking at buying myself an ibiza cupra MK4 but haven't found much out about them..

I've already looked through common problems on multiple sites but so far none have been all that helpful really as they all seem to be about 1.2's etc..

So just wanting to find out what the common issues are if there is any..

I've noticed that nearly all ibiza's have the headlight fogging issue but thats all i seem to come across.

I've heard that the 1.8T 20VT engines are supposedly bullet proof but when i've scanned through common issues i kind of get the opposite opinion.

Would appreciate some help on pointing out what problems people have had and if they've managed to get them sorted at a cost or for free by SEAT..

Thanks in advance

The only issue I've ever had with my fr tdi is bushes splitting apart from that mine has been pretty reliable I'd certainly have another, and I'd guess its same on the cupra petrol and diesel

the thing with reading online is your only going to read about the worst and all cars have there faults but to be honest the mk4 cupra is a good car ive never had a headlight fogging issue and its not all that common either.
ive had both the 1.8 and now i have the 1.9 cupra and ive had no problems with either.
the 1.8 does does suffer with coilpacks letting go but its like anything really things wear out over time and need replacing but you cant go wrong with the 1.8 cupra there bloody awesome engines in the mk4.

Hey are awesome, but for me I prefer the derv engine as you have the best f both worlds a car that's quick but delivers on fuel economy :) I went to Whitby yesterday in my derv and averaged 63mpg :) but then it can kick it's arse into gear if you rly want it to

Rusty wheel arches

Broken front springs

Creaking interior and rattles

Worn steering wheel and gear stick leather

Pretty much age related stuff tbh. The wheel arches are a sod though.

Broken springs are definitely an issue. I had one go on our lovely Newcastle Under Lyme roads. Rattles can be an issue but not had that myself in my Cupra, I did in my 1.2.

Wheel arches are perfect for me but if I did spot any bubbling I'd get it sorted quickly

Okay so from what you guys have said it sounds pretty similar to.. well any other car really.. as for the paint issue's.. is there any kind of painty warranty that you can go back to seat if it starts bubbling etc? as VW do even though its a pain to get it done..

Coil packs; Are these expensive? How often are they to be changed?

Springs i don't think would bother me when looking as i'd plan to buy coil overs to have a small drop as i think it improves the looks of the car loads but thank you for that.. i'll keep an eye out for when i go view any

As well as the common issues people have is there a small list of key items i can have to see when things are supposed to be changed on services or just in general?

Thanks :)

Basically, I cant say anything that hasn't previously been mentioned. They seem to bee inherently reliable cars.

You will always see problem posts on a car forum, as that is one of their main functions - to help with defects, and as mentioned, people rarely make a post saying "I have had my cupra 6 months now and absolutely nothing has gone wrong!".

I have had a Mk 2 Leon cupra 3 years and a Mk 4 Ibiza 3 months and so far, they have been the most reliable cars I have ever owned (going by length of ownership and money paid out on defects and repairs).

I've had my Cupra 9 1/2 years so that says it all really. Bushes aren't a problem for Cupras since they are solid. I have the rusty wheel arch problem which seems to have only affected 54 plate cars. Clutches are weak but only when remapped.

Mine will be up for sale when my Golf R arrives in May :)

Out of curiosity clutches are fairly costly right? somewhere around £1000? bought and fitted? when it comes down to car mechanics i know the very basics like how to service but not all clued up on all the different types of car parts for example single/dual mass flywheel's etc is there any specific one to go for if i ever did remap the car? am i right in thinking single mass flywheels are more for track use and spirited type driving off the line etc?

Lucky bugger :p have fun when it comes :)

I just went for an uprated friction plate and standard pressure plate along with a dual mass flywheel since I was only getting a stage 1 map which came in at under £600 fitted. Mine is a tdi btw, not sure what the petrol lads do.

Just wish the waiting time for the golf was less, can't wait to get it!

Awesome cars, don't let any hate put you off :)

I had a few problems when I got mine but that was because of cowboys, water pump let go, because it was not changed when they did a cam belt, other than that, its been bullet proof.

I have taken a lot apart on my 1.8 cupra, and most of it is a dream to take apart, most of it being zinc plated or chemi blacked, it doesn't really suffer with severe corrosion. A few bits were a pain, like the front struts, but all cars can be a pain to work on :)
