hi, i have a Leon Cupra 2.0TFSI 2007, done 20k, it needs 4 tyres soon and the ones on it are very cheap budget tyres. i already have a pair of 225/40/18 Pirelli PZero Rosso's and 1 Bridgestone Potenza, note i have acquired these tyres free or very cheap as well. i was thinking of putting the p zero's on the back and a pair of potenza's on the front as the potenza's are supposed to be slightly harder compound, so would wear better. anyway have been reading around on the forums about tyre problems and it seems theres not really a great all round tyre out there for the cupra, also lots of reports of pzeros graining and not being great, the favourites seem to be the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 PS3 but i have always know them to be a very hard compound which is good but doesnt give grip?? always i have always found them to be poor in the wet. the other favourite seems to be Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 but i always though these were quite soft tyres and wear quickly???

anyway found this link last night on tyre reviews and wanted to see what you guys thought of pzero's and potenza's or whther i should get something else.

should also add that car is used as everyday all through the year and the occasional spirited driving.

I've had both p-zero's and gsd 3's on the cupra and found them to be very capable tyres in the conditions they're meant to be used in (above 6 degrees centigrade I think). I'm now using hankook v12 evo's and they've been excellent even through all the rough weather.

I have same model cupra.
It depends what you want. Grip, durability or bling ?
If want bling get GDS3.
if you want durability get Michelins & maybe drive like a pensioner...;)
If you want outright grip, go for Continental contisport3 or better still, Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics, which give awesome grip, dry or wet.

^^^^ Really because ive had eagle f1's and the michelin ps2's are better for grip and probably durability and i dont drive like a pensioner .

Also it was p!ssing it down today floored it in 3rd and no wheel spin and thats 360ftlbs going through the front wheels.

gsd3's are soooooooooooooooo old didnt think they still made them.

Outright grip has to be toyo R1R's or similar - expensive though and just a summer tyre.

That is odd because I have the PS3 on my Audi company car, - they are expensive, very noisy under load in hot weather and poor grip in the wet.

I certainly wouldn't choose them over the Goodyears, even though they are more durable.

When I used my Cupra at Oulton Park trackday in the rain, the F1 Assys were just stellar in the wet conditions. Brilliant. :)

Michelin PS2 is about to be replaced by the Super Sport tyre so not sure whether the PS2 is still available (not listed on the Camskill site). I understand the PS3 was never designed as a direct replacement for the PS2. Personally I would go for the Goodyear F1 Asymmetric....comparable performance to the PS2 and cheaper.

Hi,

Its between the Goodyear Asymmetric's and the Vredestein Sessanta's for me.

Personally i think im gonna go for the Vredestein's. Look the nuts, really good reviews, good in wet and dry and for 225/40/18's there £100 delivered which are around a tenner cheaper than the Goodyear's.

Have a look at them.

F1/conti/pilot sport., as mentioned.

Don't get the GSD3, they're not the tyre they used to be.

I'd give the Toyo R1R a go personally, I had 888r's on for a couple of thousand miles, unbelievable grip wet or dry, no wheelspin in 2nd gear in the dry, just not reccomended for standing water due to the tread pattern. R1R's as I understand are the same basic tyre with a tread pattern suited for water dispertion

Plenty of good recommendations above mate, but forget the Potenzas, they are hard and very poor grip in the wet. :(

sounds like contisport 3 or 5 or the goodyears then, thinking of just using the potenza's and pzero's as i acquired 3 of them for 3 and there barely worn and then put some good tyres on in the summer??

Also avoid Pzero's! wear like a 50p and unless its a red hot dry day they are pointless

Totally agree with that.

They might be allright under the Italian Sun, but like Alfa's, - in Britain, they're bloomin' useless, Lol ! ;)

Also; You would be looking at Contisport 3, as 5's are not available for Std cupra 225 x 40 profile.

I put a pair of Potenzas on the front of my FR and the road noise is shocking so wouldnt bother with them. I had Vredstein Ultrac Sessanta on the front of my old R26 Megane and they were a very good tyre all round
