No worries mate. Can't help you on the MAF as to what it looks like. Again it could be the problem but i'd be more inclined to lean towards the O2 sensor if i had to pick one.

VCDS is a good option as it often gives more specific codes then an OBD2 reader. You can also view live readings from the MAF and lambda sensors, so that might shed some light on it. I'd definitely do that first as price of parts soon mounts up.

He helped me locate the MAF sensor and it was the eurocarparts one... I was getting confused!

He suggested that before spending £££ getting things replaced for no reason, I should just clean the MAF with PCB cleaner so I am going to do that tomorrow after work.

Deposit paid on replacement car anyway so will be advertising this soon, light on or not.
I'll give the full read out with it and it doesn't drive any different so people will be fully informed.

Not sure if its the same part numbers (but probably is as its from a Seat 2.0T BWE engine) - I have a used MAF and O2 sensor that I changed trying to fix a minor lean issue (on throttle though, not on idle) - they have made no difference to my fuel trims, MAF readings, boosting or fueling I think they are good and so for sale. If interested pm me and I could bring them into central London for you to collect from me one day. Maf sensor is 06F906461A and will check on O2 part number when home.

Cleaning MAFs can damage them by the way.

Hi mate,

Sorry for the late reply. I needed to get the correct torx bit to remove the maf sensor and have a look at it. I take on board your comment about cleaning and that it may damage the sensor.

This is what mine looks like:


It looks perfectly clean anyway! Or do I need to remove the cannister shaped housing that this sits in? (ie is that the bit that gets dirty?)

In any case, I won't clean it. I checked the part number and it's the same as yours. I'll send you a PM now about possibly buying it.

Yeah i wouldn't clean it mate as it's easy to damage them. However if you do need to clean one then only use IPA to do it. (maplins sell it)

Update time!

After considering the various possibilities with the help of Mr Bigglesworth, I changed a few sensors and the PCV valve. I did the sensors first and this made no difference but the new PCV valve solved the issue.

I had it replaced last week and left the car with the garage. They have turned the car on and off numerous times this week and taken the car for a few drives. They then fully cleared the fuel trim readings and took the car for another drive followed by taking the fuel trim readings. All was well!
I have also driven it quite a bit this weekend and have also started it up quite a few times too as previously, the light came back on within 15 seconds of the car being started.

So 200 miles of light free driving I feel like I can say it has been sorted. So thank you to users Mr Bigglesworth and mty12345 in particular for your help and I am now happy to list an ad for the car later in the week.

Edit:
So in summary, I would suggest that anyone else who has this fault code considers changing their PCV valve as it only costs £40 from Sere motors and is very easy to fit. Note that this part has been revised a number of times since the car was first manufactured to do a number of failures with improvements being made. So in the end, it was pretty logical that it was this part which had failed and caused the light + fault code.
