Hi all,

Been looking at maybe getting a custom cat back exhaust for my 184. Got a couple of quotes so far. My local place quoted me £450 which I thought was a bit much. MIJ Exhaust in Walsall (which is about 75 miles away) quoted me £285 which is a lot more reasonable. Does anyone have any experience with custom exhaust systems on tdi's?
And also can anyone recommend a garage that make them? 75 miles is far enough for me to travel. I'm based just outside Milton Keynes.

£285 is really cheap, you're looking at about £650ish + vat for a full high grade stainless steel system. Anywhere which does custom exhausts should be fine creating one for a diesel. I've got a place which is fantastic in Watford but it's probably too expensive. It's a brand new car, cheap is not always best. You need to ask if the system is mid steel or stainless steel and what is the actual grade of the metal they're using and if you can see any previous work. Keep in mind that for my Cupra Miltek want something like £1300 for a cat back.

Also, being a diesel you won't really get any gain from a catback as it'll just sound more tractory. You'd be best getting maybe a dpf delete with a custom system to get any throaty or power gains. Are you looking to remap?

Wasn't really bothered about any gains, just wanted more sound. I have DTUK box installed already so wasn't planning on a remap really

Make sure you check what metal they use for the exhaust and what grade it is. You want nothing but the highest grade stainless steel to get the most life and value for your money. I'm unsure about the sound difference to be honest. I used to have a 184fr and it was so quiet and the engine was pretty noisy. You may benefit more maybe if you put an exhaust on then do something like a big cone filter to get some turbo noise out the back. You can get a cone and a reducer to fit the standard box as I tried it with my old 184, it wouldn't cost the earth either.

I've watched some videos on YouTube of a cat back on a 184 and it sounds quite nice to be fair, you hear the turbo a lot more

Are you sure it's just a catback with the dpf and cat? I found a lot of them videos had a dpf delete at least, that's why I ended up buying a Cupra

I could be wrong, times have changed and it's been a while since I looked at getting my old 184 done. I had it when it just came out so there wasn't really much about, if you have any joy make sure to update the forum of your progress!

They're the same company and in the same building, that's not bad at all to be fair. Probably a lot more straight forward than the cupra, their work is fantastic

You could try R-Tec in St Albans they sell some of the bigger brands but also do you a custom job if there is something specific you want.

I had one done by them on my Beeza Cupra many, many moons ago. Did a good job.

Can anything really be gained from a performance sytem, on a diesel?

I'd imagine if there's some combustion going on then anything to improve/manage the flow of those gases would have an impact on performance.
