Hello,

I have a Cupra (not R), and 10 minutes ago the Engine symbol came on (amber) and won't go off. It doesn't flash, it is just on and amber. I have turned the car off and back on again a few times and it' still on.

I have looked in the manual and it says it is the "Diagnosis/Excess of Pollution*" light.

I am at work tomorrow so i really need to know if the car is safe to drive and can i damage it by driving like this ?

What exactly does this light mean ?

Best Regards,
Andrew

Hi, Just read through the posts (like i should have done in the beginning!) and one thing i have noticed in my car is that the temperature gauge doesn't always work. Sometimes it stays on 90 and sometimes it stays on zero. Could this be it ? (Although the gauge has been doing this for a couple of months now, without this dash light coming on)

Regards,
Andrew

its possible they are related but that particular light can mean a huge range of different things, i wouldn't drive the car any distance until you have had it checked to find out exactly what is wrong.

Thing is i know absolutely nothing about VAG (or cars for that matter), so if i take it to the dealer i bought it off (SG Petch, Durham), who is a Seat dealership, am i going to be ripped off by them telling me it is this & that ?. How much should a VAG test cost from a Seat dealer (roughly) ? am i talking £70 ?

Regards,
Andrew

They will probably charge you £50 for diagnosis which is rip when you could buy vagcom for that (do a search). Alternatively, put a request (in the vag com section) for someone with vag com in your area to scan it for you.

Anyone in Durham area willing to do a VAG test on my Leon Cupra ?

Hello,

I was asked by one of the forums to place my request here, so here goes !

Is any good person able to check out my car with VAG equipment ?. I have a Leon Cupra and i have had the "Diagnosis/Excess of pollution" light come on tonight. I am willing to take it to my Seat dealer, but fear they will rip me off with a bill for £50 just to have the VAG test done !

Is there anyone in the Durham area willing to help me out ? I am obviously willing to pay for this. I would preferably like to get this done tomorrow as i need the car for work, and if there is anything wrong with it i would like to get it sorted asap.

Best Regards,
Andrew

Yeah, car seems fine !. The only 2 problems (albeit minor), that i can think of is the temp gauge sometimes not registering (never goes past half way though), and the ABS light often comes on, but i told them about this on it's last service and they couldn't find any fault.

What is the Lambda sensor ?, could that be expensive to correct ?

regards,
Andrew

Hi Andrew,
My guess would be the temp sender has caused the light to come on.
The temp sender on your car is a dual sensor, basically it has two sensors in it, one for the gauge and one for the engine e.c.u, normally if one fails, the other one isn't far behind it, so would get it checked on the diag machine. the temp senders are around £26 from the dealers and take about 10-20 minutes to fit with the diag reset.
Hope you get it sorted, and if it is only the temp sender it will be fine to drive as it will have a preset measurement stored and will run fine on this.
Jochen.

Many thanks Jochen, i'll get it checked out tomorrow and report back. Fingers crossed it's not going to cost too much !

Andrew

Well just been on the phone to Seat dealer, they seem to know (from my description) what it is !!. How clever of them, eh ! lol.

They seem to think it is the coil whatever (sorry, i'm fairly clueless), and that it would cost around £85 all inclusive.

Doesn't sound like i'm being ripped off, but i cannot be sure !

Cheers,
Andrew:cry:

Thanks Damian, that's actually very close to me ! - however, i've now had to ring the Seat dealer and book it in as it was getting quite urgent for me (need the car for work as there are no busses !). They quoted me £85 all in (for the VAG test and fixing the problem). They seemed to know what the problem would be (i cannot even remember what they said it would be, i was too busy listening out for the price !). But all in all, they quote £85, which doesn't seem too much of a rip off ? Maybe it is. Not sure !

Regards,
Andrew

Hi Damian, that sounds very reasonable and tempting, but wouldn't turning the light off just mask the problem ?. If it's something more serious then i'll end up having to go back to the Seat dealer and they then wouldn't offset the price of the VAG test with the price of parts ?.

Best Regards,
Andrew

It may be something very simple as just a basic resetting but depending on what it is we could also fix it for you aswell, we wouldn't just send you away with the light turned off but the problem still there (the light would also most likely come back on aswell).

Does the £85 for Seat include fixing the problem no matter what it is as if so then that isn't too bad, aslong as it doesn't turn out to be something really basic?

Haha, that's true!, i guess i'll never know with the SEAT garage whether i'm being ripped off or not, and i don't have money to burn either!. I really haven't a clue what to do for the best. Do i just keep the appointment for 12:30 and assume that it is really going to be what they think it is going to be, or get an independant person in the know (like yourself) to have a look at it ??. I just haven't a clue !. As i say, the car seems to drive fine, sounds the same, and i have had problems with the ABS light coming on (but SEAT couldn't find a fault), and the temp gauge sometimes staying on zero, so hoping it's simply that !

Best Regards,
Andrew

I was too busy listening out for the price that i forgot exactly what they said they thought it could be !! - i actually think they did say the temp sensor, or could it have been coil something ? I'm sorry, i haven't much of a clue about these hi-tec engines !, i'm more an old BL Mini man !. But she did seem to know straight away by the year of my car (52) that it was a problem which would take half an hour and £85 in all. So i'm thinking they have had this problem with quite a few cars !!

Andrew
