Different tyre models on same axle

Hi there,

My understanding is that there is no law associated with having different make/model tyres on each side of one axle, is this correct? That won't fail an MOT will it? The tyre sizes have to be the same but they can be different makes/models, correct?

I have a Bridgestone Potenza 050a on one side and a 040a on the other. Nothing illegal there right?

The MOT states that it needs a certain amount of tread, and certain combinations of cross-ply and radials on axle that I can never remember. But since cross-ply tyres are virtually extinct you don't have to worry about that. It doesn't care what brand or model tyres they are. I'm not even sure the tyre size is significant.

I've purchased vehicles with all four tyres being different brands. Sure, it makes the car feel horrible, and different wear rates can make the car difficult to drive, but there's nothing illegal about it. Although there is a strong argument to make it illegal, and you can bet the first thing I do is buy a full set of new tyres.

Yes agreed on best having equal tyres all round, but sometimes a unrepairable puncture, manufacturer not supplying the model tyre anymore, etc. makes for it to be difficult to comply with at times.

has to have same size tyres on each axle. make is irrelevant.

Im currently running 1 Toyo Prox and 1 Yoko Prada on the front

Passed the m.o.t fine and they have completely different tread pattern too

Cant wait to change the prox over tho as it feels a bit odd tbh
