So today I've disabled the soundaktor on my manual 280, and quite possibly discovered why they put it on in the first place.

All I now hear is a slight blip between 1st and 2nd and rushes of air (with the windows down)

I believe it would be better in the DSG as you get the software induced pops and bangs.

Although it was obviously alot of fakery, it added more of an occasion to the pressing of the flag in the manual.

I'm going to give it some more time I think, this car seriously is a sleeper

Roll on 300 err I mean 290...

Simple answer is turn the sound off (as its fake) and fit an open cone air filter you will get real noise to enjoy without being in your face.

I heard my 300 from the outside and it does not sound bad at all. I think the cabin is too well sound proofed. Luckily the weather is good so can drive around with windows down

Yeah, and that's why I'm not in a rush to turn it back on just yet.

That said it was on in the S3 and R and I honestly didn't mind it.

As this doesn't have a sports exhaust I wasn't sure what I was expecting sound wise.

I'm going to hold off on any mods on this car and see what the 290 sounds and feels like with it on and off as a daily.

Things will sound different especially with it being DSG.

They always sound better from the outside. If it's loud on the inside too then people on the pavement give you judging looks as you do a DSG fart past them. Not an issue with my stock(ish) 280 exhaust but my bro-in-law S3 has a de-cat downpipe and it's so loud you can't help but laugh at the reaction it gets.

Fakery or not, if it sounded like this i.e changed the sound on the outside too I'd be less disheartened (shallow I know)

I guess in this case it's opening flaps too though?

At the end of the day aren't all the pops and bangs in the DSG essentially driven by the software?

Is that not an exhaust with a flap? Wouldn’t expect the exhaust to be any different with it turned on or off (the actuator that is not the flap)

Yeah as said above, the audi S range all have flaps in the exhaust, which are in no connected to the sound actuator, the dsg fart isn't so much mapped in but its caused by fuel igniting in the exhaust, because the ignition timing is retarded to make the gear changes less jerky, if you've driven a early SMG gearbox you'll know the feeling, audi are now moving away from dsg and going for a torque convertor box (zf8) same box bmw use, so you no longer get the dsg fart

Yeah, my point wass that I wouldn't mind so much if when I pushed the button both the sounds from inside and outside the cabin was affected

In truth I had to be told about the actuator in the Audi as I thought it was all flaps

Nice explaintion mate

However I have to say the manual doesn't do it (not saying it isn't possible)

In the 290 when you put the DSG in S specifically it does it consistently under certain conditions for you. This has to be programmed surely ??

No actuator is simple the crap sound in the car, the sound from the exhaust is because of these babies.

And

plus a bit of a revo tune on the motor.

No flaps just power and exhaust.

In Comfort mode its nice and civilized.

In Cupra Mode its mad, both power and the noise but still so far no drone.

The manual will do it, but you have to get the gear change exactly right, the reason the dsg does it everytime is because the change is done for you therefor it's right everytime

Cheers for the education guys :)

Just thought I'd throw this into the mix..

On the point of the Audi S active exhaust range.
Apparently on the SQ5 e.t.c they're diesels and they don't have flaps.

They are synthetic sounds. The changing of the mode through the button is boosting sound both on the outside and the inside of the cabin. I read it being referred to as speakers in the exhaust.

Anyone confirm?

Yes I have heard that as well (sure its on some of the Golf's as well) but not on the Leon, there the actuator is internal only (till we see the MY19 Model then who knows.)

Audi sq5 is the same 3L v6 turbo engine in the audi s4 s5 etc, has flaps in both the left and right twin tail pipes, yes there is a sound actuator in the car for cabin noise, but it isn't linked to the exhaust flaps, if you go into the drive mode, you can select the engine noise and exhaust flaps separately in the individual menu
https://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/s4-exhaust-valve-tweak.326088/ check the 5 post down and you will see the valves
