On VAG-COM, in test mode, my dashboard showed a "low oil level warning light" as a yellow version of the low oil pressure light, but does it actually work?
If the engine has a low oil level indicator, you should find a bolted on slab halfway up the front (hopefully) of the sump. One interesting fact, if you have a low oil indication system (it works by heating two thermal probes - one at min safe level and one below - if they both read the same temperature then the oil is covering both - if they are both out of the oil then I would immagine you had missed the first warning) and it detects a low oil situation, nothing but nothing will cancel that indication even although the reading was spurious - until you have opened the bonnet. On the other hand, if you have a low oil level situation, then open the bonnet and top up (if necessary) AND the microswitch (security) on the bonnet lock is u/s then once again the warning will never go off until this switch is replaced - fancy eh? (take to dealer and hand over wallet 1-0 to dealer!)
Edit, maybe the oil level thing is on the base of the sump not up the side!
