This is done in America on the MK4 Golfs for Autocross to allow them to get tighter turns.

Put it this way, my sisters fella has a saxo, went round a corner quick and the drop link had snapped it went into a kind of spin & roll and nearly landed in the river on his roof, if a suspendion system is designed with an ARB then its ment to have an ARB its like saying can i remove 2 of the cams on a quad cam v6, not really it was designed to have them.

Interesting. So many MK4 dubbers run with no ARB to get low. But they drive so slow that it wouldnt affect the handling...
thanks for the replys spoke to a few mechanics today and the reckon it would be ok without it as the suspension is so stiff but to be on the safe side arb is the way forward whats the bes one to go for fixed or adjustable

Welll if it works without, why have vw spent so much installing these on every car, say they cost £20 to vw compleate, you make 50,000 cars thats 1,000,000 on arbs for cars, so why is it ok to remove it? its there for a reason, if its to go low then whats the problem? how low do you want it till sparks are coming off the sump?
if you are oing lower than 40mm you will need a whiteline arb as it goes over the drive shaft apposed to under it so wont rub

Youll find adding a rear ARB will have a very positive effect on the handling. Its only then youll notice just how unconnected the rear of the car is as standard.

Technically speaking doesnt a manufacturer fits these as a compromise with the specifications of the suspension ie softer suspension = comfortable car but with more roll so a roll bar is added to aid the rigidity but keep the comfort levels to a pre determined level and if the car had rigid suspension you wouldnt need a roll bar like the suspension on my Marc Norden Racing kit car. The trade off could then be track/race type coilovers without the ARB, no? however fuction over style i would not do it.

Yup, the ARB's came about when 205's were the hot thing.
They have soft suspension with ARB's to stiffen this up.
Your car will work fine without an ARB but TBH the difficulty of getting this out makes it something you would REALLY want significant benefits before doing.
If you've had a look at it fitting uprated drop links is way easier than removing the front ARB

That answers a question I had. I was out for a blast last night and on one corner it felt like the back end was trying to roll me over taking the front end with it.
Mines a 1.9 Tdi Mk1. and I want to improve the handling. The other questions I've got are:
1. How much benefit in changing the front ARB up/down in size
2. How much benefit in adding a rear ARB ?
Most of the searches I've done have all talked about LCRs. I'm thinking of changing the suspension to a better one (and yes, I've read all the threads on coilovers and I don't have the time or the expertise to set them up myself) and I'm comtemplating the impact of doing the ARBs at the same time.
If anyone can point me at any threads or offer up useful suggestions, I would be grateful.
