Hi Guys

I'm trying to fix my dodgy central locking module, been following the guide on mk IV forum which is spot on in removing the internal door panel etc, however on loosening the gold bolt on the edge of the door to remove the door lock barrel nothings happened.

It seems like the door lock barrel is stuck in the door. Any ideas? Anyone else had this problem?

Any help would be appreciated !!!!

It shouldn't be stuck...but it's been there, what, 10yrs (?) See if you can get a thin, flat screwdriver underneath and carefully prise it out

If you have the door panel (the inner, metal one) off anyway I don't s'pose you have anything to lose by taking the bolt all the way out ...should be able to push it out then by levering a screwdriver through the gold bolt hole

That particular bolt is a very odd one, I had to carry on turning it for ages before the barrel came out. If you get hold of the barrel and start to try pulling it out, while undoing the bolt you should feel it slowly start to wind out.

TllEWL also has a valid point though, it's been there for a while so don't expect it to come out easily. It's the typical 'Haynes manual' syndrome, everything would go to plan if it was a brand new car!!

Use something rubber tipped and thin to prise the lock out otherwise if you slip you will scratch your door.

Try screwing the bolt back up and unscrewing again. Unscrew a bit and try prising it out then unscrew a bit more. If you unscrew it too much the screw will fall out and is a pain to get out if you don't have inner door skin off.

Shouldn't be an issue here, sounds like he's already aiming to get into the door anyway.

Is it the 20 torx srew. U need to hold the outer door handle in open position tnen turn torx screw till it goes loose then your lock should be free to take out. The srew is onto a cam so if u dont hold handle open it will fowl on door handle mechanism an lock wont come out.

Ricky3 I've tried that and still stuck fast. I've even tried mole grips on the outside of the barrell. The painted cap has snapped off after trying a screwdriver under neath.

Next step might be to drill the rivets out and remove the inner doorr panel with out the locking module which is not really what i want to do

I've got the same problem on the wife's mk1.
I've slackened the screw all the way back while holding the handle fully out and it still doesn't budge.
I know this is how you do it as I've done other golfs and Seats with no problems.

I just put loads do wd40 on mine and a massive wiggle and eventually she came but if you haven't done one before it can come across confusing how it works, keep trying

Right guys sucess at last well in getting the locking module out any way lol !!! Right following the DIY on VW Vortex here http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?1015107 follow the stepts to step 15, here push the centres of the plastic rivets out gently they'll fall to the bottom of the door but you can get them back when the carrier panel is out. Once the centres have gone gently push the rivets out trying your best not to mishape them. The locking module should now be free from the carrier panel, enabling you to continue and carry out up to and including step 17.

I then looked inside the door to the back of the locking barrel and could see that the gold bolt should be sat in a groove on the lock barrel housing. As you loosen the bolt it should move the groove its sat in then releasing the barrel. Mine wasn't so using the screwdriver i managed to move the bolt into the groove which then when loosening the bolt again allowed the barrel to come out.

The only thing now is I have to figure out whats wrong with the module as don't think its dodgy soldering, all the soldered points and tracks are covered in what looks like a red silicone or some time of anti corrosion covering.
