door lock problem

My driver side door lock failed recently. I have now repaired the lock barrel with a kit from ebay and this now works fine when not in the door. However when i put this back in the door it seems there is something wrong with the mechanism in the door as it will not lock and the interior locking button doesn't go down fully. I am wondering if this is what broke the barrel mechanism in the first place. The car locks fine on the passenger side. Any advice appreciated!

Also when I have the barrel removed and try to work the mechanism with a screwdriver it still doesn't lock properly.

Sounds like the lock unit has a fault on it.
