Driveway Gearbox Fix!

I am out in Spain and have recently bought a Seat Ibiza year 2001.
Car has 4 new tyres new Disks and a good sounding 1.4 petrol engine, which is an AUD 1.4 8V, with a DXK 085 type gearbox. Spent 3 days servicing, cleaning, fixing and popping out the dings on the body. If you have been to Spain you will have noticed the state of the Cars here! When I took my revamped clean and fresh Ibiza out I discovered gearbox whine. Louder as speed increases and also on the over-run, only way to silence it was to balance the throttle to the coasting speed so it is neither driving or slowing.
Googling tells me this is common with 085 gearboxes, it is the bearing on the end of the output shaft where it drives the diff. Box works fine no jumping out of gear and all syncro works!
I did find G/B oil was 400ML low and topped up with regular ep70. This improved the changes but whine stayed.
I have read-up on gearbox work and this is what I figure I need to do:
A. remove gearbox. B. remove output flanges from Diff and split gearbox. C. remove bearing from output shaft and race from bell housing. D. Set up end float and reassemble, using new parts which I have bought: Bearing w311 405 625f and new set of oil seals (4) and 3 bottles of oil. I have somewhat simplified the whole procedure to be brief.
The other option is the scrapper box lottery, here every 3rd car is a Seat, and they are lined up in recycler’s row upon row in model and year order.
If I can do the bearing fix, I would feel more confident, changing bearing and seal on the gear change shaft to prevent further loss of oil.

These are my questions:
1. Is it possible to do the gearbox removal and refit with the standard jack and a pair of axel stands? Or do I need a trolley jack?
2. Apart from socket set, bearing splitter and dial gauge what other tools do I need, there are some star head type fittings what size?
3. Any other tips for a drive way mechanic?

Thanks Seatmann for the link. I have viewed it all. I want to keep the strip to a minimum just to do the bearing. Will take picks when I do it, but boy those were some good close up shots in there better than the dark ones you get in H***s manual! I think I really knew I would have to buy a trolley jack, it will always come in usefull.

the star head bolts you referred to are called Torx bits, buying a full set of them wont hurt as VAG uses them a lot on their cars
you would also need some Multi-spline bits for undoing driveshaft bolts (they look like the torx bolts just more edges to them)
also, some sort of torque wrench wouldnt go a miss

Yeh good idea, the last time I bought a set of torx it had both spline and torx in it as well as some allen key types, very useful to have knocking about. I would still have all mine but I lent them out lol, typical.:)

Ta. Smiffymk3 Got the torx bits set and the multi spline #8 and #12 from another project I probably need a #10 to be on the safe side but yet to find one. I can borrow a torque wrench so glad you mentioned that.

They're called "Ribe bits" if anyone else needs to purchase some.

Was thinking of doing my LSD myself, after reading the VWVortex guide I think I might give it a miss, don't have the puller tools...
