DSG lag

Wondering if anyone else experiences a pretty annoying lag from their Leon DSG when taking off from idle. Regardless of mode (ECO, SPORT, or NORMAL) it takes the 'box 1-2 seconds to react at all when I press the accelerator. Then instinctively I press a little more, so when finally "contact" is made I get a big jump forwards with the usual wheelspin. Love the car otherwise, but this is having me wonder if there's actually something wrong with it.

True...this is the way the DSG TCU works it's tuned for a "smooth ride", durability and fuel saving.

Since there is no Launch Control, there is no way to avoid that.

Also, I hate when you are lets say...in 5th gear doing 50-60kms/h and you start slowing down maybe because of a speed bump etc. The car lingers in 5th gear! until the revs drop under 1.3k or so it starts downshifting... this makes a very slow reaction when you try to accelerate since it downshifts from 5th to 2nd or even 1st gear...not good.

This is not the case if you switch the car to Sport, the transmition downshifts if the revs drop below 2k but....I dont like that mode for normal city driving...oh dear...

Yeah, so it seems. If I were to do it all over again, though, I would still order it with DSG.

I dunnoI find the sport mode S shifting take off from idle pretty good. It can lag in D yes but I kind of expected that. But even in D , when I want to avoid lag I press it down a bit more right away (without touching it gently first) and its fine. Took me a day to get used to the DSG though.

I havent had this happen yet (i go through couple of speed bumps on my way to work every day), are you going 60 towards the bump and slow down 1s before it ?? My DSG even in D always downshifted to the correct gear before I went through the bump. Im not trying to defend it just cheking how fast you're going through the bump

this is why I ordered the paddles on my car as well. I've got a semi-auto box on C2 at the moment, and you definitely have to learn to drive it differently.

its quite visible here...

a guy "that can´t belive" a 220ps Skoda is the same as a 280ps cupra, you see the lag at the start, and its a DSG cupra vs a MT skoda

There something strange on Cupra shifting, the pause at 30 is weird, so is the start.

first of all he has ESC ON... so the computer is limiting hp..

well yeah, saw the full acceleration video its the same, but saw another one from a MT and its WAY faster...or at least it seams to by the timecodes..

it could just be a guy, that loves his Skoda, and is trying to "make it seem faster" its a hot hatch sickness, being 100% sure that you could accelerate faster than everything on the road..

But have driven DSG cars, that in heavy acceleration did some wierd stuff... but my guess is missing LC and ESC on.. is what makes this run seem slow.

Ok I went out to have a go.

I tried Normal,Sport - D and S and Manual modes. And in every single one of them I could get almost instant reaction from the throttle as long as I didnt treat it as a MT (maybe what some do?), obviously when I started pressing really gently it would give 1-2s delay. But whenever I pressed it a bit further immediately not progressively, it would be noticebly faster, Id say comparable to MT, but it didnt jump (unless you press it down real hard, obviously it takes getting used to) .. just a normal smooth take off.

hehehe let me explain, there are A LOT of speedbumps, pot holes etc on Mexico's roads....(A LOOOT) so I live this every single day I drive my leon.

normally if the bump is short but long, (I call them pancakes) I can go over them relatively fast, like 40kms/h. Before slowing to that speed, normally I drive at 80-90kms/h so the car is either in 6th or 7th gear, when I slow down, it downshifts to 4th or 5th gear.

Obviously, the car is sllllllooowww since its reving at 1.2-1.3k and if I press harder...then it downshifts to 2nd or somethimes 1st and immediately 2nd

What do you mean by "I didn't treat it as a MT) ??? I'll do what you say, I'll press harder and see if the lag is gone.

What I mean is when I had a MT it started to go instantly even when pressing down gently. WIth DSG you do need to get through that threshold instead of starting from the top. Not too much though otherwise it will jump away its kind of hard to do but im getting used to it now and will go without lag when I need too.

EDIT: dont get me wrong though I do see this as a DSG draw back, you shouldnt need to do stuff like this to avoid lag..

Thanks for this. And yes, I've tried that too, but again I can't really get a smooth take-off but the car rather jumps away. But I'm gonna experiment a little further. I actually think that I do go about the accelerator as if it was a manual. Never thought about that....

Oh and one more thing - the only way this seems to work is right after releasing the break pedal, when the car ia still in full stop. If you let it creep there seems to be the lag no matter how you press down on the throttle.

I'll try to see if theres anything that could be done to get around it, you could do it like this - if you let it creep you might as well press the throttle down very gently too, in that case it will be ready to go without lag when you press it down further.

That sounds like AI. If you are creeping then the PTC probably assumes that you are in traffic congestion and dulls the throttle response accordingly.

That's just plain stupid, if it's true.... Why are they programming the 'box to do everything for you?! That sense of directness I am missing more and more each day. Things like these almost make the damn thing feel like an old, stinkin' torque converter crap box. Which is a shame, because most of the time the bloody thing is brilliant.

Probably trying to emulate the kind of gentle clutch modulation and throttle control that a driver would perform with a manual transmission when driving bumper to bumper in heavy traffic. The clutch pedal has gone on the DSG so the gentle take-off has to happen some other way.

I think I read somewhere that it takes a while for the DSG PTC to calibrate the clutch bite point after a clutch replacement. Presumably the same would apply to a brand new car and the situation will therefore improve after a few days?
