That's an expensive choice to make - how come you bought DSG if you had no faith in it?

I had faith in it whe i got it but over the 18 months i just got bored of it, i had read a lot of people commented on how jumpy the box could be and also the increase in mechatronic units failing. I decided to cut my losses and just get a manual !

18 months since new in mine has made me love it even more than I thought I would. Relaxed my driving style as well compared to my LCR days, which isn't a bad thing....

Not sure if this is the same but from a cold start, if I move away slowly the DSG box will hold onto 1st gear for too long and revs can reach 3000 rpm before a clunk is heard and it drops into 2nd. If I move away quickly this change happens sooner but you still hear a clunk as if the 2nd clutch is engaged or something.

From a warm start none of the above is applicable.

My (pre-FL) petrol FR DSG has been slowly developing what seems to be exactly the same problem as rllmuk experienced here.

My car's booked in next week for 3 days investigation for another fault (the little orange engine light keeps coming on every now and then despite having umpteen sensor changes etc)... so I've asked them to look at this DSG issue too.

My commute is about 60-80 mins and towards the end of it in the mornings, it's a lot of stop-start traffic into Nottingham. I first noticed the jerky clutch on-off-on-off thing a while ago after a very bad traffic jam. At first, it needed about 45 minutes of stop-start traffic before the car was hot enough(?) to show the problem... but it's been getting slowly worse until now I just need to drive around the city for about half an hour before the issue rears its ugly head. It's like this:

- when slowing down to traffic lights etc, the gearbox seems to 'hang on' to gears too long, almost as if it's unwilling to change down. Often when it finally does change down as you come to a stop, the engine revs itself as if it's recovered from an almost-stall.
- when starting off from stationary it's as if the clutch engages then lets go, then engages again, like some sort of learner driver who has no clutch control. Sometimes this 'bunny hopping ' is so bad that your head (and those of passengers) gets jerked backwards and forwards. It's embarrassing, to be honest.

It's always been a bit jerky when reversing, especially up-hill, but when you can't drive off smoothly forwards it's a bit more of a problem!

Putting my right foot down harder when starting off seems to avoid the lurching in favour of a smoother quicker launch, but I don't often want to start off like that and frankly it's not an option in slow traffic jams (at least, not without looking like a complete twit).

Does this 'lurching' and 'clunking to a stop' match anyone else's experience?

definitely have it looked at. It maybe this infamous actuator thing...

as for hanging on to 1st while cold - mine does this as well... First cold start of the day, holds 1st a bit longer then usual but it is literally only first change. if I drive 50m, stop and drive off again it will change just fine....

I never thought of this a as a problem....

How many miles have you done? Anywhere near the 40k oil and filter change? Just wondered if it would make a difference.

Right... well here's hoping that the garage agree that summat's up with it. If necessary I'll have to get them to ride in the car once it's hot enough to show the fault. If I leave it with them and they take it out cold, they probably wouldn't notice anything wrong. It only starts misbehaving after about 40 mins.

I've done about 26k miles by the way (from new). I realise that there's a special DSG oil change required at 40k service... but tbh it's getting worse too quickly for that. If I waited til 40k I'm sure I'd be lurching along every traffic jam. :(

The fault for me showed at around 20k. When they checked mine, it had slightly too much oil in from the factory apparently, but that may be rubbish.

The only way I got them to admit it was a fault was by taking the car down to them when it displayed the issue after I'd been driving for around 45 mins. Took an engineer out and he could hear it was struggling - he drove it just to experience and confirmed not normal. Took it in a week later and it took them over 2 days to replicate, but as the guy had experienced it with me he knew there was a problem so they persevered for the report to Seat.

Since the mechatronics replacement I've done another 20k and not had a re occurrence - it's smooth as silk in all conditions now.

Thanks for the info rllmuk. I'm reading lots online about people struggling to get their dealer to admit there's anything wrong. I'll obviously explain that it only happens after 45 minutes of city driving and hopefully they'll test it properly and see the problem.

i have started noticing my leon tfsi fr, jerking a bit when taking off at low speeds. makes it look like a cant drive. i thought this was normal for the dsg as it was the first one i drove. until it became more noticeable. parallel parking is a bit of a chore because of it too. however if i use the paddles to take off slowly it goes just fine. do ye think this could be the mechatronics unit problem?
i didnt buy it from a stealer just an independent garage but i do have a 6 month engine and gearbox warranty of which i have 3 left.

I have started seeing exactly the same thing as rllmuk in the last couple of weeks. Noisy changes from 1-2, 2-3 and a few times this week really jerky changes 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 that were very bad. I am going to get it booked into the dealer (Camberley Seat). I have a 2.0TFSI FR on a 57 plate, with 26k miles on (just had the 3 year service).

Will let you know what happens.
