Does anyone know exactly how the manual engine stop-start feature works. Sometimes the engine shuts off, sometimes it doesn't. I know bout disengaging the clutch pedal but it seems intermittent. What else should I be doing?

Could be that the engine isn't up to temp, you have air con on.. There's a few reasons it disengages.

In use you put her in neutral and release the clutch... The handbrake isn't involved for some reason!

Yes it has a list of parameters that have to be met before Stop/ Start can work, mostly temperature and power usage related etc.
