ECU location

Hi folks

I've just bought an LCR that came with an unfitted "superchip" and decided that it needs to be fitted - only problem is that I don't know where it goes.

I'm assuming that it goes in the same place as the ECU but I'm not sure where it is and was hoping you guys could help.

Also is it easy enough to fit? It looks (from the style of the chip) like you just pull the old one out and push the new one in but that seems too simple. Is there anything else that needs to be done or should I leave it to the experts or just plough on and swop them over?

Thanks
Rhys

the 'chip' would need to be soldered onto the board in place of the existing one.

Equally it could be totally 'wrong' and not for your car (or amusingly the £1.60 base part)

ECU's are £700 new, so you could do a lot of damage

No it's not a solderable part.

It looks like this - http://www.bmwnbb.com/mini/index.html - second picture down on left hand side.

I don't believe it's the wrong part as it came from the garage who took the car as part ex.

Your exactly right I don't really want to go messing with the ecu unless I'm sure what I'm doing is right, which is my original reason for asking for advice.

Trust me, that thing goes nowhere near your ECU

I can't remember what that is for, but it's not going to fit your ECU

Im sure that chip shown in the link holds the original settings for the car just incase you ever wanted it reverting back to standard. It goes no where near the ecu though. Im pretty certain its plugged into a portable device to upload standard settings and then the standard settings uploaded back to the vehicle through diagnostics port. Physical chipping on new cars is practically unheard of as all 'tuning' is done diagnostically now :) Even superchips use the diagnostic port:)

Are you sure your car hasn't already been superchipped?

All chipping does is fool the ecu into thinking its receiving a higher volume of air. Ecu advances and more fuel is pumped in giving more power

Not really reccomended to be honest mate. Your much better getting it done properly and spending £500 on a remap. At least you'll know everything will be running fine:)

Thats the way i understand it anyway, you maybe better phoning superchips and asking them directly:)

Chipping and re-mapping are the same thing.

And nothing is fooled into anything, parameters are changed in boost, fueling and ignition timing altering the way the car runs.

You saying the resistor chips sold on ebay are the same as remapping:blink:

Resistor chip FOOLS the ecu into thinking airflow is lot colder and dense than it is. It intercepts the signal and gives a new signal to ecu. ECU then compensates by pumping in additional fuel.

Just type ''fooling ecu'' into google and hundreds of results will come up reference chipping and the explanation as to how it works;)

Chipping and remapping are not the same thing IMO. Superchips obviously remap if done through diagnostics and alter ignition/boost and fuelling values.

chipping is just where ANOther tuner removed the EEprom from the ECU & programmed it off board

remapping is where they do the same thing via OBD Port
