egr replacement?

Having been experiencing some poor performance issues and a strange engine stutter i decided to unplug my egr valve. I was amazed by how much of a difference this has made to my tdi cupra and how there is now LESS visible exhaust gas (less unburnt fuel possibly?). Having previously had my car remapped and having to revert it due to bearings going and a turbo replacement under warrenty!

My only conern has been that the engine mangagement light is now lit which can be slightly annoying and also in the back of my mind its making a me a little scared as i might genuinely have an engine problem one day. So i've been looking around and noticed an EGR replacement which someone earlier pointed out a good site to visit for mods http://www.allardmotorcompany.com/pages/products/pd_exhaust.asp

has anyone had a replacement done on their car, does it still flag up with a problem with one fitted?

is there some thing else that can be done to just disable a sensor or 'something' to stop this egr from appearing?

my car is a 54 plate tdi cupra

Hi rob, I have fitted a home made blanking plate to my 99 T plate Tolly 110 and previously to a rover 620 diesel that I had, both cars drove better and emissions at MOT reduced dramatically. I never had the management light come on though. But when I also replaced the turbo oil feed pipe which was leaking, I had to take the inlet manifold off and was amazed at the fact that a third of the inner circumference of the pipe was covered in thick black tarry gu nge, all caused by the EGR pumping soot, which mixes with the oil mist, and settles on cool inlet tracts, (all cars with EGR suffer from this gunge) so I took that opportunity to clean out the inlet tract and intercooler. Yr car is newer so wont have suffered as much, take my advice add years to its life, KILL that EGR, the EGR was always just a sop to left wing liberal ,cross dressing, tree huggers and is only tested on the day it leaves the factory.

Rob, your tuner (if you go to have it remapped again) should be able to turn off the egr function inside the ecu. There's a post on here from a tuner who says that he usually asks people when they come in for a remap whether they want it doing or not.

well that sounds promising, its just i read some where (cant remember if it was this forum) that with the cars made from 2004 + they cant be turned off without the management light coming back on and also previously it was possible to lower the limit for those that dont want to tinker to much, but again thats been stopped, apparently ?

at present ive got a nice screwdriver bit blocking that small tube?? lol

if i wasnt so lazy and had more room in my ibiza i might be tempted to clean out my egr as it might have a load of crap inside there as my remap couldnt have been done correctly as it was seriously smoking - scares me to think how much gunge might have collected in there now !!

how does the blanking plate you got work?

The newer PDs (approx 04 onwards) are clever enough to work out if the EGR is not functioning.

The thinking so far on here is that the newer ECUs can work out from the MAF readings whether too much fresh air is being drawn in - which would indicate no gas being recirculated by the EGR (as this would reduce the amount of fresh air needed).

So my guess is that even if you blanked off the EGR, the ECU would still flag a fault.

The best way - on these later PDs - is be to get the EGR disabled by one of the remappers.

One pre-04 engines, just bung the EGR vac pipe up, job done in under 5 minutes (See other thread about this).

my mate has vag com and is a mechanic, is this something he could sort out for me, or does it require some other specialist knowledge that only remappers have?

AFAIK you won't be able to do anything with vag-com on your car.
On the earlier PDs and non-PDs you could reduce the EGR quantity (but no disable it), however I think on your car you can no longer do it with vag-com.
