Egr valve location on petrol

I'm looking to clean the egr valve on my bky engined 1.4 16v petrol. The guides here all seem to be for tdi models with the flying saucer style valve.

Can anyone tell me where it's located on these petrols?

If I have to remove the throttle body do I also need to recalibrate it with vagcom or does it happen automatically?

Thanks!

it s usually fitted at the front of the cylinder head to the right as you look at it
yes remove throttle body and clean out and clean out the pipe from egr to throttle body
and reset with vcds

You need to release a bracket roughly half way along the EGR valve pipe - bolted to the big black plastic thermostat housing to make life easier - that pipe will probably need unbolting at the EGR end and the TB end, though, I think that you will find the EGR valve to be almost spotless, any dirt/gunge will be where the EGR pipe enters the TB, that end will probably need cleaning out. Just remember not to be temped to apply any force on to the throttle plate while cleaning it with carb cleaner.

Maybe leave the TB connector on, though forcing it to go through the basic settings routine would be best is possible.

Thanks for info. Was looking up the EGR valve for this engine and it looks like the electronic valve type so you're probably right with the throttle body muck.

Is there a way to force a recalibration without VCDS or am I just going to have to shell out for it or find someone with it?

Well it is not quite an electronic EGR valve, more like plunger that gets moved a bit - with positional feedback.

Anyway, there was an urban myth/truth that if you switched on the ignition but did not start the engine, the throttle body would perform basic setting, ie it would move the flap to both extremes - this is all the basic setting function does, but it does then store both end stop voltage positions and checks that they are valid, ie roughly what it would expect.

The EGR, if removed and cleaned can also get commanded to perform basic settings, again moved from end to end and end stop voltages checked and stored.

I'm not convinced that giving things a quick clean will solve your listed problem as the engine can live happily with limited EGR issues, but time will tell - every little bit counts!

When you are doing this, maybe give the MAP sensor a treat with some carb cleaner - it can be found bolted to the driver's side of the inlet manifold, no need to worry about gaskets as it has an captive O-ring seal.

BTW, when I as a boy(!)I used to travel home on a boat called Loch Arkaig, quite fast but made to be top heavy to satisfy the needs of some piers!

Yes I'm afraid that is the boat, "Nova Scotia Schooner" style hull, went well, could get seriously threatened of being swamped by a following sea, did lean over quite a bit in heavy seas which you could always gauge how bad things were as the engine room guys would come up above sea level, maybe just in case. I seem to remember that in its career in the Western Isles, the life boat was prepared for launching on a few occasions, though I'd doubt if being in the life boat was any better than staying on board!! Me, I tended to be in the toilet bent over the pan shouting for Hughie!!
