Washing my car on Sunday, I sprayed the tailgate with hosepipe water and BINGO! - it opened.

From now on I'm always carrying a 20L polycan of water + spray nozzle with me, so I can open the tailgate easily without pressing the button. Isn't tech wonderful?

You got to get the right action, foot underneath and move backwards quickly, sidewise is preferable... dont trip on anything behind. The cat as I said, has perfected the art when I'm standing behind without me putting my foot underneath. A quick dash underneath and up it comes towards your face but does beep unless you turn the sound off via coding (not a good idea). A Garfield cat that sniggers.

I did have one incident when moving houses. I'd loaded the car with disused sat and hifi equipment in the boot for a tip run. Think all that metal acted like an aeriel and made it hyper sensitive, then it did start lifting with no foot under the back.
