Engine Cleaner

Hi,

I tried searching this but just ended up with readers rides.

I want to clean up my engine but mostly the hoses. I have a breather pipe leak under the inlet manifold and the pipe is covered in what looks like dirty oily mess. I need to find the part number under it all but would also like to keep the rest of the engine clean so can spot anything else going wrong.
I looked in Halfords at engine degreaser and it looks designed for metal - I would guess its designed not to damage rubber hoses too? It also says to cover up electrical devices. I have a 1.8T AUQ anybody recommend what to cover.
I would prefer not to use a spray so any alternatives please - also any tips on how not to screw your engine up would be ideal.

thanks

J

I have used the autoglym and the gunk, gunk is best by half i was not impressed by the autoglym at all, what i find is a good way to clean the engine and surrounding bay is to buy your self a weed sprayer which you can pressurise, then fill it with water pump it up spray the gunk on the engine and you can then rinse it very accurately without soaking the whole engine, its like using a very small jet wash.
