Engine issue?

Hi guys, any ideas about this? Leon Cupra 280 DSG, on just over 120,000 miles. These are the error codes. Has been happening for a while now. 6 months after an oil change, car asks for 1L of oil every month or so. When the cars idling, it’ll rough idle sometimes, and revs will fluctuate and engine will judder, but only intermittently. Getting low to mid 20mpg with normal driving. No other symptoms. I’ve got a res delete, no other mods. Changed the PCV valve and PCV hose recently. Had a compression test last year. All compression is within spec, but at the lower end of the range. Ideas?

Check if all the connectors are seated correctly on all those thingies just behind the coil packs. You might check the magnetic cam actuators on the left of the engine. I just replaced them preventatively with Febi units (about 30 euros each), easy job

The video shows only 1, but our engines have 2

I may do the same with the magnets. I’ve had one replaced in the past, and had them swapped over to see if those are causing the issue. I cleared the codes and rescanned, and only this fault returned:

This error occurs when the inspection or oil change has not been reset correctly.

1 Liter of oil feels like a lot, it should go somewhere. What does a visual inspection tells you? Any clear areas where it might leak?
No oil under the car on the road at all. Some slight oil misting around the top of the timing chain cover, but nowt major.

If you know better, why do you ask?

What the hell… Did I say I know better? I said the reason you have suggested is not correct. The end. If you don’t know what the issue could be then don’t reply.

The engine is burning oil in the block which has caused the cat to fail because as you say it has been happening for a while. It's likely oil scraper on the piston rings which is why you are at low end of the compresssion.

The camshaft sensors need replacing which is giving you the rough idle, camshaft sensor fault and crankshaft sensor fault.

I’ve already replaced the camshaft position sensor. Do you think replacing both the cam magnets will help?

Both cam magnets and new cat then you think?

Yes but there is no point putting a new cat on the car if the car is burning oil, or it will just end up failing again. You need to be looking at what's going on in the cylinders before changing the cat.

Compression is within spec. And car is on >120,000 miles. So I’m in no position to start rebuilding the engine or replacing the engine. What would you recommend?

I’ve ordered a new chain cover with bolts, gasket and cam magnet gaskets, 2 cam magnets and new oil cap. Let’s see..🤞🏼 (these were areas of oil misting). There’s also oil in the can magnet wiring connectors…

You don't need to rebuild or replace the engine, you can use a borescope to look inside the piston chambers. If it is the oil rings it will just be a new chain and piston rings. Compression will be within spec because there is likely not much wrong with the 2 compression rings. If you look after the engine and keep up with repairs there is no reason it can't last at least another 120,000 miles.

New chain and rings is labour intensive and expensive.
