Engine Metallic Rustle/Rattle

Apologies if this has already been discussed before. I can't find a thread referring to this, although I did find another member comment about it in another thread.

I got my new Leon FR 1.8 TSI last week and am really enjoying it. There is one slight annoyance that I noticed the second day I had it. It is a quiet metallic rustling/rattling noise coming from the engine bay under light acceleration at low rpms (generally <3000). Another member has described it as the sound of rustling leaves and I believe this is the same sound I am hearing.

Interestingly a quick Google reveals a thread on the Audi-Sport forums with people describing the same sound on the 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI S3. (I don't have enough posts to link but search for "1.8 TSI metallic rustle" and it is the first result). Worryingly they are saying Audi are aware of the issue but don't yet have a fix.

I have not spoken to my dealer about it yet as I wanted to canvas opinion. Does any one else have this issue with the 1.8 TSI or any other engine size? Thanks guys.

Same here.

Mine drives fine, fluids are fine, no dodgy smells so I'm wondering if it's something like a heat-shield vibrating?

I can only hear it at low RPMs with the window down and low traffic - it's not a clanging else I really would be worried!

Not had chance to get her back to the dealers since buying her new in September but I'm adding it to the list...!

Yep, same here with my 1.8. I would have described it as a fluttering noise. I mentioned it to the dealer and not surprisingly they said it was 'normal'. Had it nearly 12 months and hasn't got worse or caused any issues. Can be annoying if you focus in on it though.

There are lots of heat shields in the engine bay, especially near the turbo and exhaust downpipe.

I suspect that I heard a similar noise last night when turning into the driveway. I thought it sounded like a brake pad dragging on the disc.

I did't think I would be alone with this. It isn't the end of the world as it is quiet but it is a bit irritating when I hear it.

I'd agree with the fluttering description too so it sounds similar. The discussion on the audi-sport.net forums seems to suggest it is wastegate related turbo noise. I'm pretty sure this is the same issue as the engines are likely to be very similar as they are both part of the VAG.

This is the Audi bulletin (translated from German) shared on the Audi forum:

I have read extensively up on this on other forums. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it sooner on SCN.

The above post pretty much sums it up. It's not a fault but more a design issue which has not been adressed.

It seems a lot of people on the german forums also mention it was heard on the 1.4 (122PS) and some people reported 1.2 engines as well. Not seen it mentioned on the newer versions of these.

Got a very similar noise on my 1.2 when accelerating from a stand still and in the rev range as above, however our ibiza 1.2 is fine.

that thread is somehow relieving, I've noticed this sound in my Leon 1.2TSI while moving from low speed and gearing up from 1st to 2nd and no noise around and windows down.

i was soo worried it could be the DSG acting up, but from what i've read here, looks its something common related to design!

Sorry I can't give you a link as I don't have enough posts. The thread is on audi-sport.net and is called "1.8TFSI and 2.0TFSI S3 : Metallic Rustle/Rattle between 1500-3000 rpm". If you search for the thread title in Google you should find it easily though. The bulletin is listed partway down the page.

I confirm I had the same on my FR TSI 122 and it was adressed with a clip I think on the wastegate actuator.

There is an official document from Seat about this issue. If you want I can ask my dealer about # or reference.

Just been to dealer to get service indicator reset, asked him to listen to what I believe is noise as described above, he said turbo wastegate, ask if known problem he said no, and no tpi, but will check with Seat in case they have not released yet, or others hsve reported problem.

Service manager called much earlier and Seat are not aware of such a problem, he will test another car and compare to mine.

You are getting engines mixed up, the 1.2 has a modification for a spacer and software update to stop wastegate rattle.

I've not heard of any 1.8/2.0 concerns that's been mentioned hear on audi's but I will check next week when I'm back at work as the German tip is interesting

Not getting confused, as others in this thread have reported noise on the 1.2 engine and 1.4, maybe its another noise.
