Engine Noise at 60 mph

Car is 99(T) 1.9 TDi vario estate - 148k miles.

Noticed that there are already a few threads regarding noise but this problem does not seem to have been covered anywhere.

Driving long distance at the weekend and noticed change in engine/road/ whatever noise. Suspected exhaust and after a quick look noticed a small hole at the tailpipe/silencer and this has now been replaced via Mr ATS.

However, noise still seems to be there. Under 60 not too bad but around 60 mph gets quite loud. beyond 65-70 noise goes back to just ordinary engine noise - just seems to resonate about 60. Noise is like a drone or similar as if some noise reduction measure has been removed or come loose - engine seems to run fine just concerned if any damage may be being done that I am not aware of.

Thoughts appreciated and please ask questions if I haven't explained anything as it is a difficult one to write without an audio clip!!

From what I've heard from other people its an induction roar that happens on all VW Golf GTI engines so it will happen with the Cordoba if you have one of those engines. My 98 SXE 1.6 does it at certain rev ranges. I may be wrong but thats what I've heard

Sorry didn't read your message right, you have a TDI, I don't know anything about the engine noise on those, sorry about that

No problem dylanlaw - thanks for looking.

Given this some more thought and think it must be something that only happens when the car is moving, ie - if I sit and get the engine to 2200 rpm (approx) then the 'noise' does not seem to be there.

Could it be something to do with the front wheels or similar maybe? It also seems to there at lower speeds but just not as noticeable. It doesn't seem as bad now as it was or maybe I am just getting used to it.

Any thoughts appreciated.
