Still i reckon you've got a little leak somewhere in your new system giving you the ticking noise.

Replaced the air filter, (one of them lol), tightened everything back to how it was, put ever clip back, bolt etc. and now it's... ... ... ...spot on! 
. Just goes to show lol - don't fiddle with the engine when it was ok anyway!

Without hearing said screeching it's hard to tell. I wouldnt worry about the ticking. Probably just normal tappet noise. Go find another 1.4 owner to compare it too.
it's just began 2 days ago though, sounds pretty crap...

My tappets shut up after a good flush, if one of the veins has got some sludge in it from your short journeys then this would cause oil starvation to a tappet and the ticking.
I wouldnt worry about it too much it might be annoying but the engines on those are fairly bullet proof if maintained right.
Your clutch noise sounds like a release bearing, did you have that changed when you did the clutch and if so get it back to where it was done for checking.

had the whole clutch done mate, and then the gearbox was done during easter holidays... So everything running FROM the engine is new / re-conditioned... I think . Hmm... do you know when you open the black casing on the side of the gearbox, has 3 - 4 bolts on it, think it's the inspection cap, will it gush out oil or will it be ok?

Im not that good with cars lol, I'm still learning. Managed to service it myself, NEED to change the timing belt though. Sparkplug changing is a 3 spanner job in Haynes, and so is the timing belt it was p*ss easy! I'll do it yes - to avoid any costs, and so I can learn from it too, only if you explain what I ought to do.

To be honest mate I didn't know how to take the gear box out, i just had a look took everything of that was in the way and hey presto, but i had a two post ramp and all the necessary tool's at my disposal so made it much easier anyway basicaly: disconnect battery, disconnect both driveshafts and remove the longer drive shaft completely, remove flywheel inspection plate, lift engine up and disconnect front and right mounting's completely and secure engine, undo starter motor and 2 other plugs i think, remove bellhousing bolts and remove gear box through the bottom of the vehicle
The noise could be release bearing, the shaft the release bearing slide's along or a mega worn out clutch and it might be worth adjusting your clutch to see if it makes any difference hope this helps

bloody hell mate! haha well thanks a lot anyway! . Well my mate who's a mechanic serviced it for me in feb, but he charged me all the same, so not SUCH a good mate after all haha. Anyway - he adjusted the free-play in the clutch, which is new as I've mentioned, got it new before Xmas, and he said there was way too much freeplay to it. So anyway - he tightened it up, and when I used to slow down, change down a gear and press in the clutch - it used to do a squealing high pitch humming noise, only when I depressed the clutch though. It sometimes did it too when I had the clutch in and started the car up...
This was after he tightened the free-play of the clutch up for me.
Strange... used to do that noise on my old clutch too, a year ago.
Edit - by now though, it rarely ever does this sound at all, if ever. However - it does creek and groan when I let go of the clutch slowly, say while moving in traffic etc.
And it also becomes heavier as I travel for more than about 20 mins... if yours like this Chris?

I removed my gear box because i killed it but when i removed it i found that the shaft the release bearing slides along and had split 
my clutch had felt heavy so thats what caused the heaviness for me, have you tried adjusting your clutch cable yourself??? the cutch cable may be worn/overstretched, do you get a groaning noise ???
