ESP light on but no fault codes ??

Evening all as title says ESP light came on earlier while out in the car . I wasn't thrashing it either just taking it easy as I has the mrs in the car . The car still drives fine pulls hard in all gears . I parked the car up for a couple hours and when I came back and started it the light was out . Then randomly on the way home the light came on again when I got home i plugged in my mac tools code reader and it Said no faults present. Dose anybody have any idea what the problem may be? Thanks oh yeah car is a 03 lcr

ESP light normally means a fault with one of the abs sensors or more commonly a maf sensor.
Also some generic code readers won't read VAG codes. I had this problem until I bought vag com

Am I right in thinking that if this was a maf fault the car would be going into limp mode ? But as the car is driving fine it that its more likely to be an abs fault ?

Not necessarily, a faulty maf will sometimes go unnoticed and others have bad running issues.

Just knoticed my exhaust is a bit black and sooty and its not usually maybe running rich ? Forgot to say cambelt was changed on Saturday if cam timing out would that throw ESP light or eml ?

No unlikely, if the timing was out u would know it, at best it would run lumpy as hell at worst you would be looking for a new engine as soon as you started it.

Maf can cause running rich issues. Best thing you can do is get it hooked up to vag com. If there's a light that's showing on the dash theres deffinatly a fault code stored
