hello, i got my 07 plate, 130 fr a few weeks ago... however i looked under at my twin exhaust and its starting it rust already?????!!!! When the two poles go into the back box, just around the edges of them its all looking a bit rusting, no dramaitcally but for an 07 plate car im suprsied....

1. is this normal for such a new car??

2. Once the rust start does it spread quick??

3. Is there anything i can buy to put on it to slow down the rust process??

and finally

4. As car is still under warranty, do u think i can get a shot of getting a new one??

that should be sorted under warranty as they would replace it if it was blowing, rust is detereriation and you wouldnt expect to have to keep replacing it after such a small amount of time as if they all did this which hopfully they dont you would have to after a while.

Surface rust on an exhaust is very normal unless you have a quality stainless system. the metal that the factory system is made from I believe is untreated mild steel so it will go brown and have a rusty look to it. However the twin chrome tailpipes should not rust.

Normally an exhaust system will rust from the inside out, this is due to the nasty gasses and acids in the exhaust fumes along with the moisture that you will always get whenever air is compressed.

don't worry about it at all.

If you go to a dealer about it they will probably laugh at you as it is classed as a consumable and only has a 3 month warranty to cover manufacture defects anyway.

Yea pretty normal for them to rust. The tailpipe exits will polish up well but the rest will rust, although it doesn't mean it's going to break any time soon. Go for a Milltek stainless steel system if you want it to shine :cheeky:

If you are meaning the support mounts - but saying the two poles, then they with rust very quickly because they are welded onto the back box - what you need to watch out for is when the outer skin splits as then the moisture will be trapped between the two skins and burst the inside one later. One other issue with rusting, as well as the water (product of combustion) rusting from the inside out, there will also be acids in with that water. One last thing, my wife's 2003MY Polo 1.4SE has some splits on the back box skin - but so far not leaks - so it did not cause any problems at MOT time, but if I was smart, I'd fill them in with something to stop water and salt getting in and causing more problems - but at about 60,000 miles I suppose its had a reasonable life.

You could try sanding off the rust and put a lick of red oxide paint on it to stop it spreading, although the red oxide is a crappy colour but shouldnt be noticed under there.
