Obvious one is to check for worn cam lobes...but under normal wear I can't imagine these being a problem.

Cambelt change if it's near that time anyway :)

Cambelt and water pump were done 15,000 miles ago. My car is only on 65,000miles!

There is a thread describing exactly this, and it was a bent rod, this would explain the drop in compression and the misfire.

I know I read it before I took it to the garage and told them about it. They seem pretty sure it's not a rod. Guess I would have to see what the head looks like after I have stripped it.

My money's on a bent rod. I've read about the exact same problem before.

Yeah i resurrected that thread on Friday as soon as this started happening and I changed the coil pack & spark plug to no reward!

It could be a slightly bent rod yea - but we won't know until we take off the head and see. Could be just a head gasket over cylinder 3, could be a burnt out/broken exhaust/inlet valve. No idea yet until we get stuck in!

You could try a leak down test, basically filling the combustion chamber with compressed air via the spark plug hole at TDC. If it doesn't hold pressure then it will go somewhere..... I.e into the breather system if its escaping past the the piston or out of the exhaust manifold or into the inlet manifold.

My engine suffered a snapped conrod and still ran quietly just missfiring at idle......there was no compression at all.

Also you could get a length of welding wire or studding and check the height of the piston at TDC by removing the spark plug and manually turning the engine to TDC and compare it to a good cylinder.

Good luck.

Still no update yet - getting funds together in order to sort it all out. Might look to strip it back this"jubilee weekend" being that the Queen has so graciously given us an extra 2 days off!

Any more advice would be greatly helped! Anyone living in Hampshire and knows what they are doing and wants to help then money and food will be provided :)

Cracked block would be engine replacement. Head would be head/gasket/belt replacement.

To do a head change your looking at 8 hours labour. If you were to do Rods aswell I'd do a discount for the added work.
