Hi there,

I have looked at previous posts and I have found some help, but I am looking for more info. Please some one help me? I have recently bought a 1.4 Seat Leon Y-Reg, and the engine management light has come on. My friend has VAG.com & has read the faults, and they are as below. The top three I understand go together. I am taking in back to the dealership as it’s under warranty, but they sound as if they don’t know what they are talking about, they even asked ME about the diagnostic tool my friend used.
Please can some one explain what needs to be done with the misfiring cylinders?
Also, please can some one help me with fault codes 4-6? I would like to be able to give the dealer some indication of what needs to be done. Thank you!

1) 16684 – Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire detected
2) 16685 – Cylinder 1 Misfire detected
3) 16687 – Cylinder 3 Misfire detected
4) 16946 – System voltage too low – intermittent
5) 16712 – Knock Sensor 1 (G61) on signal 2 – high
6) 01179 Incorrect Key Programming. Component no. 41 Zentral-SG-Kompf.001

Thank you :D

I bet you tuppence that the misfires are caused by faulty coil packs, and changing them will sort 2 and 3 directly. You are right to say 1 is associated with 2 and 3, but I also believe 5 is as well. The knock sensor will be reporting the misfires, and I think it will clear up when the others are done.

I wouldn't worry about number 4 too much, clear it and see if it comes back. Number 6 is a warranty call if ever I saw one.

Hi Slimy,

Thank you for getting back to me, thats great.

Please can you explain what you mean exactly by number 6 being a warranty call, is that bad? I don't understand the fault at all! What do you think it means? I am worried now!:-(

Thanks x

Hi there, was wondering if any one can help further;

Today I was on my way to take the car back to the dealer under warranty to fix the issues.

I had left the spare key at my sisters.

When I drove from my house to my sisters the Diagnosis Light was ON, as it has been since Saturday.

When I got the spare key, and got in the car and started it up (Didn't use the spare key in any way). I was about to pull off, but realised the Diagnosis light had gone off!!!!

Freaked a bit, as the garage is an hours drive away, and if the problem has gone I didn't want to make the journey. I was confused if this was just coincidence, or something to do with the second Key being IN the car.

So; put the key back in the house, and drove around for a bit, and the light stayed OFF.

Called the garage who adv to call back if the light comes on. He also said that faults read on the diagnostic software are OLD codes, but they cannot be deleted! How can I tell if they are old codes or not? But why would the Light turn off it was on previously for a few days!?

I am so confused. I called Seat, who said that if it is incorrect key programming, then the car wouldn't be able to be started at all.

I am going to get my mate to check it again on VAGCOM and see what comes up.

I am going to take it to the garage tomorrow as I am not happy with it.

Any one got any ideas?Thanks!

He is right, codes don't get deleted when the light goes off. And if I remember rightly, they're also not dated which can be a pain. Unless you know when the codes were last cleared, there's no way of knowing whether they appeared yesterday, or years ago.

When I had a failing coilpack, I could drive it gently and the light would go off. When I tried to accelerate, the light would flash a few times, then stay on permanently. Eventually as the coilpack failed, the light stayed on longer and longer. It's possible that you were being a normal paranoid driver and taking it easy, so the ECU assumed everything was ok.

The first thing is to check the spare key, so you should at least spend five minutes trying to open AND start the car with the spare key. If that works then that fault 6 can be ignored. If it doesn't, then you'll need the warranty to get it sorted. That's what I meant by 'warranty call'. :)

But after that, I'd suggest clearing the codes, and wait until 'something' appears again. At least then you'll know that it's a current fault. It is quite possible that all the codes are from the previous owner, and your car is actually perfectly fine now.

Oh let's hope that they are old codes though. I will try the Key No.2 as you suggested.

But last night I was driving on the ring road, and it feels like the car is not very powerful, yes I know its only 1.4 (Used to drive Mazda Mx3!) HOWEVER it feels judderry and doesn't pull off a smooth as I am sure it did when I drove it back from the Trader.

So, I am gonna take it back this morning for them to look at it. Even though the light isn't on anymore. Well; haven't tried it so far this morning!
