I have a few questions regarding a power-steering pump.

Did they come with 2 different size pulley widths? i.e 2 different belt types, a narrow one and a wide one??

As Ive been on ebay and there are loads for a Mk4 Polo but one I looked at said you had to check the belt/pulley width as there are 2. :confused:

Also is the power-steering pump easy enough to change??

I quite fancy having a crack at it myself.

Some have a V belt and some have a ribbed belt as far as I know. Not interchangeable without changing the other pulleys. The pulleys are well and truly welded on in my experience. Tried changing one on my mates golf, No chance. Best just to find the right one and save yourself the hassle.

why are you looking at mk4 polo engines?
i'm assuming it's a gti?
if so, look at mk3 golf gti engines.

that'd be why then, he didn't actually say what engine it was.

thats because nearly all of us on here know him and his 1.4!!! craig, i sent you a pm. ive got a power steering pump if you interested and they are easy enough to fit.

Yep cheers mate got the PM. Are they easy to do?? I know my way about with a spanner and socket set etc (engineering to trade) and I want to give it ago myself as Im wanting to start learning/doing as much as I can on my car.

How do you bleed the system once you have done it?

when i did mine i topped the system up with fluid and then jacked the front end up, started the car then turned the steering wheel, lock to lock afew times to get any air out of the system, then topped it up again, put the cap back on, lower the car, job done!

no not at all. just take the bottom hose off, on the steering pump, take cap off resovoir and let it drain. leave it a while to drain, put pipe back on then do as i said to fill it up and then good to go. found it works for me but im sure someone else will do it differently?

its not hard at all. simplyfied, take the alternator belt off, take pipe off pump and drain system. then you got 2 or 3 bolts to undo and the pump will come off. then put the new one back on and do the above in reverse. very simplyfied as i say but one of the easier jobs to do on a 1.4.

Process:

* Remove Aux Drive Belt on PAS Pump pulley
* Take the cap off of the PAS Reservoir
* Disconnect the rubber hose on the PAS Pump (return hose) get ready to catch the oil in a tray or container !!!
* Disconnect the feed pipe to the pump
* Fully drain the PAS fluid by turning the steering from left to right gently ! (More oil to come out)

* Connect pipes/hoses

** Very Important to Prime the Pump before use ! So don't turn the engine on !**

* Fill with new VW PAS fluid (get from a Dealership, very cheap) ... not all of it at once ! Do it slowly.
* Wind the Pump by hand, so as to get oil moving through the pump and system, thus priming it !
* Gently turn steering from left to right to help air escape from the PAS system ! (repeat a few times)
* Check level of PAS Fluid in the Reservoir.
* Refit Tensioner belt
* Check that everything has been fitted and put back together properly.
* Start the engine and gently turn the steering from side-to-side (to help purge the system of air).

I'm guessing we use green power steering fluid too?
