First 1000 miles - thoughts?

I picked up my Leon SC FR on Saturday, very happy with it so far [B)]

In the end went for the car that was in stock rather than waiting on the SEAT Sound pack, does sound pretty good with the standard FR system anyway tbh.

Just wondering how those with new cars have drove them in the first 500-1000 miles? From what the dealer said the whole "running in" thing isn't really necessary these days but I'm thinking initially I'm sticking to something like:

- move up and down the gears while driving, stick roughly to what the car recommends on screen
- don't over-rev it, around 3-4k rpm but not too much higher

After a few thousand the dealer reckons it should open up a bit then I should see better performance and MPG, does that sound about right?

Never had a motor from brand new before so it's a (welcome) new experience for me :funk:

I usually stick to driving like a nanny the first 1000km, then give it the beans. It's much more important that you let the engine reach operating temperature (80-120c oil) and let it cool down before turning it off if driving it hard.

Warming up and cooling down is important as always. Ive just got over 1k on my Leon 184FR, I didn't rev it over 3k nor break 70-75 in the first 1k just incase.

Ive got the SEAT sound system, which I must say in fantastic, but can understand why you didn't want to wait any longer :)

This is the only part I would disagree with.

The car wants you to shift very early and load up the engine - use your judgement and keep the engine load light.

3k max for the first 500 then up to 4 if needed for the next 500

I did wonder about that as it was recommending 5th down at 35-40mph at some points, barely 1200-1500rpm so might change a bit later than it says at low speeds if that's what you're getting at?

Im at 800 now.

Chilled out for the first 600. Didn't go over 4k and rarely touched 3k. Even now I'm just hitting 4K and changing anyway.

Will open up at 1000 but the warm up/cool down thing is important. The car doesn't sound the same or feel right anyway when it isn't warmed up so there's no point.

Did the same as you regarding seat sound. The standard system is ok but I may invest in an aftermarket system if I get to be point of wanting more.

An aftermarket sub is probably the easiest addition if needed, the Pioneer wheel well version would do the trick.

Would still like to know if all cars use the same amp or if the SEAT Sound adds an additional unit. I reckon it's all the same as the Spanish forum guy plugged straight into the back of the existing system and the 135W thing in the brochure is just marketing. Would be good to satisfy the curiosity if there's a way of knowing for sure.

Will keep it easy on the way in to work tomorrow, thanks for the replies :)
