ive just bought a supersprint exhaust for my 20vt, and was considering fitting it myself. i was just wondering if anyone has any tips or hints, or whether it would be better to take it to a garage and part with my £30.

i have also heard from a couple of people that the old exhaust needs to be cut to take it off. this seems strange to me, as the supersprint is the same shape and size of the old exhaust and therefore if the old one wont come out without cutting, the new one wont go on without cutting.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The OE one is fitted before the rear beam is fitted

The supersprint comes in two pieces

If it's cat back, it's an easy job, shouldn't take too long (90 mins) - just get the car up & high enough (safely) and you'll be done in no time. Unless you're a weakling, in which case you will struggle to bench press the exhaust one handed while tightening a clamp

Turbo back fitted for £30? rip his arm off - it's real arse of a job getting at the studs

the exhaust i want ot fit is a miltek de-cat turbo back, so i take it iv got to cut the standard one off, then is it simple from there on?

As mOrk says the standard one is in 2 pieces so you have to cut it to remove it.....I did mine a few months ago.

I would say you need a ramp or pit if its turbo back but cat back you may get away doing on axel stands.............but for £30 I'd take it to garage and let them skin there knuckles :D

iv got axle stands and a pit available, i havent phoned a garage yet so i dont have a quote.

Yeah, easy peasy. think about it - car mechanics isn't hard & fitting an exhaust can be done by YTS kids at Quick Phit places...

The turbo nuts are the hard bit to get right if they've never been undone

As already mentioned getting the nuts off the turbo downpipe is the hardest part, be carefull not to snap them off........the rest is simple.

thats sounds like my luck right there, lol, WD40 at its best then, will there be any parts i need.

the exhaust comes with heavy duty clamps and ill be ordering a new turbo downpipe gasket tomo, also borrowing a nice angle grinder for the standard exhaust removal.

also this may be a dump question but can the car be started with no exhaust, just incase i have to move it, just outside the garage where the pit is theres a slight hill.

iv also heard quite abit about rattling i think my mates got a spare powerflew exhaust mount, do i need that?

I used some exhaust sealant just to be on the safe side.

Make sure you replace the turbo to downpipe gasket to.

Start it with no exhaust and I expect you'll get EML light come on for lambda fault?

Have you got sports cat or decat?

ok mate, ill get some exhaust sealent aswell then, its a decat.

so starting the car with no exhaust wont bugger the engine up or anything then?

No but running a decat will bring the engine management light on due to increased flow to the lamda.

You can get this mapped out on a stage 2.

ah thats ok, aint fussed about that :D ill be too busy admiring my exhaust note to look at some light :D :cartman:

thanks alot of the help lads, adam i really do owe you a pint with all these question i keep asking you, lol.

for £30, let the garage do it bud, last thing you want to do is go cap in hand to a garage after you've tried to fit it yourself and it's not quite right, speaking from experience here and my little mistake cost a hell of alot more than £30!

I'm running a Wayne Angle block in mine it allows the lamda to be spaced out at an angle and stops the light coming on.

I guess you could make your own spacer if needed.

I got mine second hand but I think there about £30 from a chap on a golf forum......quite funnily enough hes called Wayne :cartman: Thats about all I know I'm afraid mate.

Might be worth asking on here as some people buy them just to run until they get it mapped out.
