any tips out there for changing the complete outer CV joint ?

I dont want to take the complete drveshaft out and replace all the gearbox oil though, just release the driveshaft from the hub end.

Is it just a case of taking the calipers, discs, wishbones, arb droplinks etc, off or release from the hub, twist the hub to release the cv joint and hammer it off the the driveshaft ?

You are pretty much spot on with your description for removing it.

But...

Removing the driveshaft will not make the gearbox oil come out.

The 6 speed shaft connect to the box via a flange which is held on by 6 bolts. The flange itself is bolted to the gearbox so removing the shaft won't make the oil come out.

oh ok, thats good to know cheers, iam just going by old cars ive had and any time ive took it off from the gearbox end, its just come pissing out.

Ill give it a go tomorrow morning then :D

I done my friends outer cv boot I just undone bottom ball joint and that allows enough movement in the hub to get the shaft out then unbolted it from the flange on the gearbox and cut the old boot off then hit the shoulders on the cv joint it just takes a short sharp wack with a big hammer.

If im right in saying they are the big hub nut style rather the the 17mm Allen key bolt if so the best bet would be put the nut on a few turns a strike with a hammer with a sharp sack should pop it out no worries I've always found with that style nut it does take a rather heavy approach. Good luck mate.

yes thats what i was doing, its a 30mm nut on the hub, i put it on a few turns and smacking the crap out of it and its not moved. maybe just need to keep trying

They can sieze in solid, theres a special tool to press them out or you can try; oiling them, heating them up and as above - a bigger hammer. Be careful though as the end can mushroom easily.

ok, now i have the cv free from the hub andits just siitting on the end of the driveshaft, agin do i just hammer it off or use the gear puller to extract it ?

When I done my mates car I had the shaft off in a vice and I believe there's like 4 shoulders I hit them with a hammer and a 1/2" extension rotating as I done it, if its on the car I would use a little less force maybe try the puller get some tension on it a tap it.

Realistically:

if you hit it once on the car and it comes off then your ok, if it doesnt come off first blow then you'll normally be better off removeing the shaft and going from there. If you batter it on the car you run the risk of damaging them inner boot as well.

how easy is it to remove it from the gearbox end ?

just undo the 6 hex bolts ?

Also need a bottom ball joint flage as the rubber looks split
