Hi everybody,

So I noticed a while back that every now and then when I start the car when the engine is cold it ticks quite a few times before it turns over. I'm curious as to whether there's a problem as its happening every day now and even this afternoon it took a lot longer than normally. Do other 184/diesel owners have this problem? Or know what it could be?

I would suggest putting the blanking plate on the DTUK box and retrying as it is the easiest way to confirm.

Fitting the blanking plate is the way DTUK test if the unit is affecting the vehicle so it is the best method I can suggest, you could just unplug it from the unit but i wouldn't want to risk moisture getting into the wiring.

Mine is the same on occasion, there doesn't seem to be any particular triggers and it has done almost 20k in the last year so isn't lack of use. I have never noticed any delay with the stop start so don't see it as a problem just a characteristic, I would be interested if you find out anything more though.

My 184 had a DTUK tuning box on it... caused me all sorts of problems in my honest 'opinion'... the struggling to start was the first problem, followed by constant regens, fans running on the car for 10 minutes after engine turned off, then came the car going into limp mode very regularly, and also having to have a boost pressure sensor replaced by SEAT who did seem suspicious I had tampered with it but couldn't prove it so was done under warranty... as soon as I took the box off - car ran like a dream... very coincidental that ran perfect when box taken off, but in my honest 'opinion' - the box caused all problems.

If it isn't the box, then is it something I should worry about? As a few of us have the same issue by the sounds of it and I fear that when the temperature really drops, will I be able to get to work in the mornings

Mine did this, not modded, would just take longer than usual to start, but not all of the time, and once running start/stop had no issue. It got to the point where it was happening every time leaving work so when I had it serviced I mentioned it and there was an engine software update which they did. I've not had the problem since.

This thread appears almost every year for you oil burners :p.

Best tip I was told by a VW tech was let it prime and glow plugs warm up. So turn ignition on give it a minute and then start.

I normally let the glow plug light go out before turning the key fully anyway. That's diesel starting 101 haha

Mine occasionally struggles to start regardless of temperature. Car is well used having covered 29k miles in the last 20 months.
