FR TDI Using Coolant ??

Hi,

I had to top up the G12+ coolant in my FR a few weeks ago.

I left just above the max line, but now it has dropped beloe the max line again.

Are any other FR TDIs out there using coolant ? I have never had any car I have owned need coolant, so reckon I must have a leak somewhere.

sounds like a leak, coolant should never really need topping up, park it on something dry which water would stand out on overnight and theres your answer.

Mine seems to be doing this, assuming it was not topped up in the first service, mine has dropped from Max to Min in 20,000 miles. Mine also seems to be buringing oild max to min in about 8,000 miles i would like to know if this is correct too

to be honest i have never checked the oil and only check the coolant when filling up the washer bottle, have not noticed my coolant going down at all. Do you drive your car hard a lot of the time, this will tend to use more oil i would assume if you do

A lot of 2.0 PD 140 engines suffered from porous heads which leaked water into the cylinders or coursed the head gasket to break and weep. Don`t know if this effects the PD170 though. Mine uses water and had one head totally crack causing the engine to hydro lock which was quite a mess and expensive to fix.

Ok , got an update last time i took it to the dealers they topped it up and said keep an eye on it.

Took it back 4 weeks later and it was down between the max and min level, so they say they have done a pressure test and can't find any issue so it must be internal. So the now say they are going to remove the head to check it out as the gasket or even the head might need to be replaced.

Car has now done 15,000. Does this seem right ?

Ok still having problems.

Dealer said they replaced the EGR cooler, when I got it back they had over filled the coollant well over
the max line. I checked after about 700 miles and it was back down under the max level. Now 350 miles more it is down between the max and min. I am really am approaching getting rid of this car.

I also have an ongoing issue with a rattle when going over bumps sometimes first they said it was the top strut which again they said they have replaced. Didn't fix it now and now they say it if defo not the suspension and have pointed the finger at the front door hinges and coated them with grease !!!

Which has done nothing to stop the problem. What should I do now ?

Have the dealer checked the coolant pipe? I had a coolant leak that was linked to the coolant pipe being cut by the fan because it was not put back properly during some warranty work on my car.

This happened to my Leon FR TDi - traced to a corroded radiator! Replaced under warranty though

sorry to drag up an old post.. was wondering if you got it sorted..

For the past 2 months my 2.0 TDi PD140 has been drinking about a bottle of coolant every two weeks.... It also now white smokes on startup.. so am i correct to assume that my head gasket is leaking too?

If so, what sort of price would i expect to pay to get this fixed at a dealer?

Mine is actually in right now, having the cylinder head replaced because the car was leaking coolant. They tested the cooling system, including the EGR thingy and they were all fine, so sent the head off to SEAT who said it was foobarred. So, thankfully under warranty (I paid to extend it only last week, as mine is an 06 reg) it will all be sorted. Mine is now on 42k miles.

Just for info, a friend of mine has a 57 reg A3 PD170 quattro, and his has had exactly the same problem, so it looks like it is a problem with the 2.0 TDi no matter what output. I presume the blocks are the same, just the turbo different and maybe some internals? His was on 20k miles.

My FR TDi has been loosing coolant, needing topping up every two or three weeks. The coolant bong comes on and sure enough the level is below MIN, when you unscrew the coolant cap I get a rush of air (being sucked in I think) and the level rises slightly.

It's in for it's 40k service Thursday next week so I was going to get them to look at it then.

Mine only started Using coolant this week, mine is quite straight forward as it's a core that's leaking. Off for replacement today. If all is good you shouldn't use any.

In one week in needed topping up twice, was around 400 miles.

Get it checked out, it's an expensive fix if all ges wrong!!!

Given that this seems to be a problem in these engines does anybody think it would be a good idea to run K-Seal in the cooling system before the problem occurs,my 2ltr TDI Sport doesn't use any coolant just now and that's after 56000mls
