Has anyone had their Front diff oil changed on their Cupra? Just had mine done at the main dealer having covered just over 40,000 miles and the dealer has never done one before and didn’t even know the car had a front diff until I asked them to service it, the dealer had to buy in the tools to carry out the service. I also had to prompt them to change the DSG gearbox oil, worrying?

I guess because you have an LSD, then it has one. Normal fwd would only have half shafts and cv joints.

Bottom line in my opinion most Seat Garages only service the non cupra models and when you start to ask about the LSD and the Wet Box DSG they have no idea. It rubbish but its what we see on this forum more and more.

Same with VW and the Haldex on Golf Rs. Most do not know that the pump needs to be cleaned and the mesh strainer (no filter on Haldex) also needs cleaning - and sooner than 3 years. I’ve seen some unbelievable pictures of dirty Haldex systems after only two years.

I think I will just have to find a good independent VW/AG specialist garage for any work like this in the future.

Good move. I use an independent for all my servicing work. They use genuine VAG parts and the correct oils and lubricants. Some people get twitchy when they don’t see a load of main dealership stamps but given my own personal experience and the experience of others, you’re better off with a good independent. My one, who I’ve used for years does an excellent job and explains everything to me. They did my Haldex service recently and took pictures to show me the parts. They also saved me around £800 some years ago when a SEAT dealership tried ripping me off. Some VW dealerships aren’t even using the correct oil and I’ve seen video footage from one forum member of how they “test drove” his Golf R after its service. Dealerships are only interested in getting as many cars through as possible to make money and some, as I’ve said above, are clueless.

Think of it as half of a 4WD haldex

Everyday is a school day! I didn’t doubt you - I’m just not up on the Cupra like I used to be - and I’ve had four over the years! Thanks for enlightening me - it actually makes perfect sense as half a 4wd system.

All Cupra and Golf GTI PP have the front front vaq diff done every 3 years and it's about £100 done at main dealer , best price I seen was £77 at Sailsbury VW , they are both exactly the same set up so a vw dealer can do it as well as Seat as I've had it done twice before.

I thought Haldex is only found on 4wd cars?

IT's a VAQ differential. The pump to maintain hydraulic pressure uses the same oil as the Haldex systems. I think it might even be the same pump?. It has gears & clutches, so needs the oil changed. YouTube has videos as to how to do it. You need two one time use plugs, one standard (850ml) bottle of the oil and a scan tool/OBD11 to read the temperature of the oil to make sure it's within the acceptable band to change it ( a bit like warming up the oil prior to dong an engine oil change). A fairly straightforward job.

Let’s hope that my dealer didn’t bodge it up then, the service managers didn’t fill me with much confidence but hopefully the mechanics are knowledgeable. Might try specialist next time, one in Chesterfield which isn’t too far away from me.

They have access to Seat's systems so will be able to work out what to do easily.

Biggest issue I have seen is that if you dont ask them to do that service they wont do it because they are used to servicing smaller leons that dont have that bit of kit. Lucky we have the full service doc that @paddy6789 shared so we all know what is supposed to be done and when.

check out https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-eurocars/vws-vaq-diff-explained/30560

and this is how the service manual refers to it

Front axle differential lock: Oil change (only Cupra models) every three years.

Grrrrr... My 280 ST I picked up in August had just had its 3 year service, but the book and receipt shows the VAQ oil change wasn't done.

I looked around to see if it is a DIY but can only find info on Golf oil changes such as:

If this oil change is the same for a Seat package then it looks pretty simple. I'll find a price from RPS Online for the bits.

EDIT - there is already a thread on servicing the diff https://forums.seatcupra.net/index.php?threads/vaq-diff-service.445565/

A lot of owners with Golf Rs are doing the Haldex themselves. It’s quite simple. Just remember to clean the strainer/gauze when doing it. It can clog up causing loss of oil flow which ultimately leads to a knackered Haldex pump.
