Hi, i was just wondering if anybody could recommend any good fuel cleaners to use on my 1.2? There isn't a specific problem but i figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a clean out :p

STP fuel system cleaner worked for my Golfs years ago, silver bottle still available from halfords - I take it you mean a one-time cleaner not a day to day additive?

I use diesel additives these days so not sure about recent petrol products... I do know Redex is pants though!

Having seen unbiased side by side tests Forte and Millers are the only companies whos products actually do what they say on the bottle.

Thanks, will look out for them! What are the benefits of cleaning the system out because my mate put redex in his Leon and said it felt more responsive on the accelerator?

Thanks, will see what i find first/cheapest :) and eitehr , i'm just looking for ways to make my little 1.2 perform slightly better :) I was considering redex as it is only £2 a bottle in asda but will probably leave it after some of the reviews i've read on the internet :D

I used cataclean in my 20vt toledo when i first got it(i bought it second hand, the car not the cataclean) and it ran far better after. I've had the car over 4 years and no problems yet.(other than a few coil packs and door seals failing).

Another problem i'm having is my gearbox is making a whining noise which i have been told is to do with the oil in there but was wondering how i could check and sort it? Thanks again, sorry for all the questions, just trying to keep on top of my maintenance!

I've just reread your OP, and you say there is no specific problem, as long as you follow the service times, ie 10,000 miles, 20,000 miles etc. Then you should be fine. If you have any problems then ask on this forum.

OP, if you have a question, always state as much detail about your car ie 1.2, 1.4 ibiza, leon, toledo etc. Sorry to sound like a nasty c**t but it helps everybody, help you with your problem. Sorry to sound like a d**k.

Sorry spent last hour searching through threads to do with the gearbox oil!

Yeah my car was serviced 4,000 miles ago but i don't think the gearbox oil was done and i will, just presumed all the different engines would be the same for my questions ;)

Thanks for the help though !

about the whining noise that you are getting, is it when you are in first gear? does it sound kind of like the sound you get in reverse gear?

No, it's every gear and gets louder with the more revs! I have a feeling it might be the gearbox going :( but it has done it since i got the car. It goes though when i press the clutch or put it in neutral

why did you buy the car if it did it when you got it?? well i had a whining on mine and it turned out to be the support bearing had failed. This was covered under warranty and resulted in the gearbox having to be removed and stripped down in order to replace the bearing. Thank god i wasnt payin for it as i am sure it would have cost me a fortune!

I researched it and loads of people said that the 1.2 engines sound whiney because they're 3 cylinders so figured it was normal :(
