Fuel Consumption on 1.6 DSG

Hi,

My New Ibiza has now covered 1200 miles, and I love it!! The is only one concern I have is that even with the most gentle driving I cannot achieve better than an average 37 mpg. I used to own a 2.3 V5 170 bhp golf which bettered this fuel economy from new over exactly the same routes, with the climate also perminately on. Is something wrong with the ibiza? It seems a bit odd that a far lighter car with 65 bhp less is achieving the same economy

Hi Ian,

I would have expected to achieve better consumption.
Problem is if you contact Seat, they will fob you off with your driving style so it is difficult to pin point the reason why you cannot achieve better consumption.
Hopefully you'll get postings from other DSG owners as to what sort of consumption they are getting.
I am still waiting for my DSG:cry:
My dealer tells me to expect it "around the middle of October". I ordered it in the first week of June.

Hi,

I hope your arrives soon. I hope the consumption improves soon. May i should have gone for the Prius I also test drove.

Cheers

have you tried using the manual mode, perhaps its the DSG which isn't changing gear at the most efficient times?
Hi,

Yes have tried driving in manual, and thats even worse lol.

Ahh well

I am getting the car supagarded next week. I am hoping it may protect it form the bird splats!!!

probably be cheaper to give it a good wash, polish and wax for the same effect and protection from what i've been hearing/reading

Hi Ian

I'm perplexed as to how and why your only achieving 37 mpg! God only knows how bad it must be when you boot it! ;)

Now, admittedly, I don't have a DSG model but my 1.9TDi manual is achieving on average 56-58 mpg and when i'm racing it through the gears it's around 48. Quite a difference to yours i'm sure you'll agree.

I thought the whole reasoning of the new 1.6 was because of better mpg and emissions etc.

To be honest, i'd be a bit annoyed about those figures you're getting. Try your dealer. You never know, they may want to help and explain/investigate. Maybe Canonman has thoughts on this??

All the best with it though mate. Shame you're also having problems with bird shite too. Basturd things eh!! :( I use Meguiars NXT polish. Very very good results. Try it.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Ian, i have the 1.6 Sport and on average (since January 09) i have been charting my mpg on my ipod and only manage 38mpg. Although sometimes on longer journeys i get 43 - 45 mpg. I mostly do longer journeys (around half an hour each leg), but occasionally shorter "hops". All-in-all it gets around 38mpg. Seems pretty much in line with what you're getting.

I suppose if i drove "frugally" then i could up that to around 40mpg !

Regards,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Many thanks for that. At least I now know there is not a problem with my car eh. Shame that for the power output, the old 1.6 is not very efficient eh. Its looking like the new 1.4 supercharged/turbocharged engines would manage a better mpg. I was just thinking back to the car I had before my Leon. Its was a Golf 2.8 V6 4motion. Even that managed 31mpg average!! Seems like things are going backwards eh.

Thanks again

I know !. When i bought it i was under the impression i would get the combined mpg (cannot remember what the book said, think it was around 43mpg), but i never get that on average !....still better than my previous Leon Cupra which did 29mph roughly !

2 things: One: never-ever take a manufacturers MPG as gospel and expect to get it. I think they get these figures on rolling roads and are generally just very high! Two: wait until the car has loosened up a bit. I assume its a brand new Ibiza and your mileage is the first real milaegae on it. Give it a few 1000 more miles and I bet it will have improved!

Yes I agree, although the cars I have compared the mpg to were achieving the mpg's mentioned from new. The moral is old engine design = no good. Still love the car tho.

I test drove the 1.9tdi for one hour, i gave it some and got 41mpg and then cruised on motorway to replicate my driving and acheived 46/47/. My leon 2.0tdi only gets 40 - 41driving extremely carefully although claimed 50.1 average. I would expect that the car is fine, just a claimed mpg figure.
