fuel gauge stopped working

shot down sliproad with a porsche in tow behind me
looked down and saw i had a quarter of a tank MORE FUEL THAN I HAD WHEN I STARTED THE JOURNEY
slowed down a bit (let the porsche catch up its only fair ) and then it stopped working and hasnt done since
nothing else affected

anyone had similar or know how to correct the problem

mine used to just die
it look down and it was flat empty no warning
never mattered as it was always relatively soon after filling up, and turning the car off and on again made it work

hasnt done it in about 6 months now though

When it happened to me, it was just that the float had come off the end of the arm. The float is just a bit of closed-cell foam, so the dealer just stuck another one on!
