Basically was reversing onto my mate drive and then wanted to go forward,
but it just got jammed and would not move. Try to put some force into but nothing was happening. Now it just move up and down but not sideways.

Phoned my local garage and he cant come out til tomorrow morning to look at it.

Dont know much about cars so really would like other people opinions on it.

Before you panic have you tired pushing the clutch a few times?. Almost stalling but pressing down again and repeat. Sometimes the teeth don't align correctly and a few clutch presses will move them about a bit.
I got mine stuck in first the other day while on a slight hill. Although could be a more serious issue :(

If you do what is suggested above you might not need someone else to look at it.

Open bonnet, remove MAF and air intake and look at the top of the gear box.
There should be 2 cables with a spring mechanism attached to the top of the gear box.
If there not then you have found your problem

Quick update: my mate phoned me. He said he took out the gearbox. Checked everything for faults and said everything was fine. Gears were working normally again.

Put everything back together and then started the car, went to 1st fine. Then put it in reverse and got stuck again.

So what he told me was the gearbox has gone. He got a 2nd opinion who also confirmed the gearbox has gone :(.

So now will have to get a another gearbox

Mine used to stick when the bush in my 'side to side' gear linkage was worn. Made a home made, more robust, bush and it's been fine ever since.
