Gearbox help!

Well what a great start to the new year. Driving to norwich lastnight for newyears, got 5 mins down the road and felt this bang, like i'd ran over a deer or something large. I pulled over to check the car was ok, looking under the car i saw oil pouring out everwhere, great!
I managed get home the car seemed to drive fine, as it was dark i left it for the morning. Checked my oil levels in engine and it was fine, as it is its looking like my gear box.
Anyone know the reason why my gearbox would just loose all oil?

diff pin/rivet on crownwheel has come out... and ripped thru your g'box casing.
sadly a common occurance on vag g'boxes.
terminal for the box.

Bollox, i had a mk2 golf that had the same thing happen! how unlucky can you get?!
What'd be the price on a reconditioned or new gearbox.

Same thing happened to me on my mk2 golf 16v when I was on the A3M on my way to Chichester to see friends to celebrate new year. Put 5 or 6 holes in my gearbox casing. Car still drove in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Sat on the hard shoulder for a few hours playing eye spy and made it to the pub in time for new year.

i seen a mk2 golf up cheltenham once , he was reversing and went to do a burnout , the next thing that happened was his gear box went bang and started pissing out with oil , have a look on e bay for a ibiza cupra breaking
