Hi all, I have a 2021 SEAT Ibiza FR 1.0 TSI manual, which I've owned from new. THE FAULT DEVELOPED AT ABOUT 35,000 MILES. Unfortunately, it is now outside the SEAT warranty. Its been driven with care and not ragged around.

I've been experiencing problems selecting gears, particularly reverser 1st, 2nd and 3rd. 4th and 5th seem to be fine.

The symptoms are:

  • Occasional difficulty selecting reverse 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears.
  • Occasionally difficult to get the car out of 1st or reverse.
  • Sometimes I cant get it out of 1st gear and have to pull the gearstick quite hard, resulting in a crunch.
  • Reverse can also crunch when selecting it, even with the clutch pedal fully depressed.
  • The clutch pedal generally feels normal but can occasionally feel a little spongy.
  • The clutch pedal has never actually stayed down by itself.
  • The biting point/pedal position has not noticeably changed.
  • The car has never crept forward with the clutch fully depressed.
  • Pumping the clutch pedal doesn't appear to make any difference.
  • The problem occurs just as frequently when the car is cold.
Interestingly, with the engine switched off, I can select gears without any difficulty.

Garage inspection and findings

I've had the car looked at by a local garage. Their findings were:

"Gear selection is difficult. 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are difficult but 4th and 5th seem okay."

They also noted that the clutch pedal can go from feeling normal to almost down to the floor, suggesting a possible clutch fault.

However, they haven't confirmed the actual cause of the problem. Their proposed next step is to remove the gearbox and inspect the clutch for wear or damage.

They have recommended replacing the clutch assembly, including the slave cylinder, along with the dual-mass flywheel.

They have also stated that if the gearbox oil contains debris, a further gearbox inspection would be carried out and I would be updated.

The estimate provided is:
  • Labour (8 hours): £500.00
  • Clutch kit: £222
  • Dual-mass flywheel: £361
  • Flywheel bolts: £41
  • Slave cylinder: £120
  • Gear oil: £68
  • Environmental/consumables fee: £10
Total: £1,587 including VAT.

Before committing to this work, I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone who has experienced similar symptoms.

Does this sound more like a failing slave cylinder or hydraulic issue, a clutch/pressure plate problem, or could it actually be an internal gearbox fault?

Would you be inclined to proceed with the proposed gearbox removal and clutch replacement, or investigate the hydraulic system and gearbox further before spending nearly £1,600?

I appreciate that the garage needs to remove the gearbox to properly inspect the components, but I'm reluctant to replace the clutch and dual-mass flywheel without knowing whether they're actually responsible for the symptoms.

Any advice or similar experiences would be appreciated, many thanks.
