Gearbox Oil Change

Hey all,


I did have a search, found a bit of information, but basically was wondering if someone could tell me what is required to change gearbox oil on MK1 LCR?

Think a spline socket is required as well? But not sure which one?

Also whether any new washers/plugs or bungs are required to replace or best practice to replace.

Any recommendations/help is much appreciated.

Not entirely sure as im still waiting to do mine, but there is a post on here which advises overfilling by up to a litre, aparently makes gearbox sound a feel smoother, can only help to prolong life, i was told 2l of oil is req, iv therefore bought 3l oil from opie oils.

Correct me if I am wrong, but there isnt an oil change schedule on the box?
If its not out of the car, why change it?
To overfill jack nearside of the vehicle up and overfil via original level bung.
Box holds 2.3lts so overfil by 1 ltr.

Correct, no gearbox oil change interval, it comes under that magical "filled for life" shite

It's a complex mechanical item that has to deal with thousands of gear changes without causing grief. The oil in the gearbox aids the synchromesh with the right amount of friction to keep the changes smooth, and protects the rest of the bearings etc.

Makes sense to me to change it..... I'll be about due to change mine for the second time shortly, first did it around 50k and now around 116k. For the cost of the oil (£50 tops) compared to the cost and hassle of a second hand gearbox, makes even more sense

Dropping the oil will let you see the result of your missed gear changes too, with small flecks of the synchromesh teeth floating in it.

Only down side is the used oil stinks like cat pee

gearbox oil is fill to spill, some engines have either a triple square bit or a massive allen key. Just remember to remove the filler cap (top one) first, just incase it is siezed up!!!

Yep best to check which drain plug / fill plug style you have before buying a bit!

Its an M16 security bit if you need it, the other plug is a 14mm hex

Thanks guys for the info. If the filler cap on top is seized Any recommendations how to free it up? Will this need to be replaced?

Just want to check before to make sure I have everything to do it.

just use mong strength 10 and it should come off....if not be imaginative and use a extractor tool. only need replacing if its broken.

Okay the filler plug for the gearbox oil is on the front side of the box and not the top - missed that from my PM mate, sorry!

Once you locate the drain plug on the bottom move around to the front of the box and you'll find a matching plug there, this is the filler one.

Remember the 30Nm when tightening the plugs, don't want to damage the casing

yeh i meant top of the side...haha. horrible nightmares of gearbox oil dripping down my arm
